ABSTRACT - DESIGN OF ECORESORT IN MADIKERI

Eco-resorts are a different setting of tourist accommodations unlike the conventional resorts
which depend on the site and the natural resources for it sustenance and gradually end up
depleting the resources and damaging the natural landscape of the place.
Ecotourism appeals to a wide range of travelers, of all ages and interests. Travelers who choose
ecotourism are responsible consumers interested in social, economic and environmental
sustainability. Seeking authentic local experiences and opportunities to give back to the
communities they visit, many eco-tourists participate in voluntourism activities.
Increasingly, eco-tourists are also seeking to minimize the carbon footprint of their
travel, traveling with climate in mind by choosing consciously. Among the other facilities
including access to the destination, public transport, connectivity to other places, services, leisure
activities, exposure to the local culture and lifestyle are stressed upon. The accommodation
facilities at an ecotourism destination is a prime factor. This type of independent lodging
structure are called eco-resorts.
Aim : To design an eco-resort in madikeri keeping in mind the site potential and the various
opportunities to develop the tourist accommodation facilities in the region in an ecofriendly way.
Objectives: To integrate tourism with local population and provide for their economy, give the
tourists an experience of the culture of the place all put together in beautiful natural
environment.
Scope: The project would get the tourists who are in search of a medium tariff resort with eco
features used in the planning, functioning and maintenance of the resort. The study is limited to
the design related to ecological, site features, local factors and materials adhering to the
principles of only ecotourism society of India.
Concept: The design of the resort is based on arrangement of various degrees of zones from
public to private depending on the activities happening in each zone and the interconnectivity
and circulation required within the zone. The buildings are placed so as to decrease the solar gain
and various eco features are installed which form the central spine of functioning of an ecoresort.
