8th Grade Unit 1: Exponents & Scientific Notation Clear Expectations

Prerequisite Skills:
Simplify/write expressions with exponents
Simplify expressions using the order of operations
Operations with integers/rationals
UNIT OVERVIEW: In this unit students will learn that a value can be represented in expressions which can be can be
expanded, condensed or combined without altering the property of the value. Students will learn that expressions with
exponents can be simplified by applying mathematical laws that are identifiable through a pattern. They will also learn that
when numbers written in scientific notation they can easily be compared and the powers of 10 show the magnitude and size
of the number. The numbers can also be manipulated by applying the laws of exponents to perform calculations.
