ESC101- Assignment 2
YEAR LEVEL
Unit Overview

UNIT OVERVIEW
Science
Year 2
UNIT 1
Water- Our Precious Resource
DURATION
3 weeks
This unit of work involves the investigation of water by year two students. The unit will address how water is created, why water is important for
humans and other living things and how water can be conserved and managed for the future. The three lessons included will progress and
address these concepts which are linked by the selected curriculum outcomes.
Year level description
In Year 2, students describe the components of simple systems, such as stationary objects subjected to pushes or pulls, or combinations of
materials, and show how objects and materials interact through direct manipulation. They observe patterns of growth and change in living
things, and describe patterns and make predictions. They explore the use of resources from Earth and are introduced to the idea of the flow
of matter when considering how water is used. They use counting and informal measurements to make and compare observations and begin to
recognise that organising these observations in tables makes it easier to show patterns.

CURRICULUM INTENT
STRANDS & SUBSTRANDS
Science understanding
Earth and space science
Earths resources, including water, are
used in a variety of ways (ACSSU032).
Elaborations
Identifying the Earths resources
including water, soil and minerals, and
describing how they are used in the
school.
Considering what might happen to
humans if there were a change in a
familiar available resource, such as
water.
Identifying actions at school such as
turning off dripping taps that can
conserve resources.

Science as a human
endeavour
Nature and development
of science
Science involves asking
questions about, and
describing changes in,
objects and events
(ACSHE034).
Use and influence of
science
People use science in their
daily lives, including when
caring for
their environment and living
things (ACSHE035).

LINKS TO OTHER CURRICULUM AREAS

Mathematics -Year two
Strand- Statistics and probability
Sub strand-Data representation and interpretation
Identify a question of interest based on one categorical variable. Gather data relevant to the question (ACMSP048)
Create displays of data using lists, table and picture graphs and interpret them (ACMSP050)
RELEVANT ACHIEVEMENT STANDARD

At completion of this unit, students will have an understanding of water, one of the earths most important resources. They will understand the
concept of rain and be able to explain how water is created. Students will be able to contextualise their acquired knowledge by identifying ways
in which water is important in their everyday lives, including why living things require water to survive and grow. Students will be able to identify
and reflect on the consequences of a lack of water and identify ways in which they can conserve water to prevent these consequences from
occurring.
