Human Body Systems/ELA Informational Research ~ PowerPoint Rubric

You will be using the DiscoveryEd.com website to use as your main researching resource so that you will be able to create a PowerPoint project for the Human Body Systems
science unit that we will be studying this quarter. Remember to use the key vocabulary terms for this science unit as much as possible when you take your research notes. Your
PowerPoint will include images, diagrams that youll need to label, and written summaries of many of the different human body system topics that we are studying. Please use this
rubric as a guide when you are creating your research project. You may use your science notes about the human body systems, the DiscoveryEd.com website resources, and any
other teacher-approved materials from other websites on the Internet (BrainPop and Study Jams) to complete this reasearch-based project.

Students must add more information than what is listed in each section of this rubric in order to earn a Level 4. **
Human Body Topics:
Level 1
Level 2
Level 3
Level 4
1.) Unicellular Organisms vs. Multicellular
Organisms* Compare the similarities and differences
between each type of these two types of
organisms: (unicellular and multicellular).
* Describe the parts of a cell and each of their
functions. You must include a picture of a cell and
labels these parts of a cell:
> Nucleus
> Cell Envelope
> Nuclear Pore
> Mitochondria
> Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
*Explain the relationship between cells, tissues,
organs, and organ systems and give an example
for each one of these.
Due by: Friday, October 2, 2015
2.) Skeletal System- * Research and determine the
skeletal systems role in the human body and
explain which structures/parts are found in this
portion of the human body.
* Identify the following joints found in the human
body and find a drawing for each one.
> Ball and Socket Joint
> Hinge Joint
> Gliding Joint
* Label each of the joints listed above and
explain, in detail, its role in the skeletal system.
Tell where you would find this type of joint in the

3.) Muscular System 5.L.1.2
* Describe the role of the muscular system in the
human body and explain which structures/parts
make up this portion of the human body.
* Compare and contrast tendons and ligaments
using a Venn Diagram showing the similarities
and differences between these two parts of the
muscular system. You should have at least 4 facts
(or more) for each portion of the Venn Diagram.
*Determine the differences between voluntary
and involuntary muscles and write a 6-8 sentence
paragraph describing these differences.
* Research the following three types of muscles
found in the human body and explain each of
their functions. You may add an image of each
type of muscle to add to your PowerPoint slide(s)
for this topic to add to your Level 4 opportunity.
Due by: Friday, October 16, 2015
4.) Nervous System- 5.L.1.2
* Research the nervous system and generate a list
of 10-12 bulleted facts/notes that you took when
you read about the nervous system.
* Create a diagram of a neuron and label its
parts. Then, you will need to explain the
function(s) of each part of the neuron.
* After you finish telling about each part of the
neuron, you will need to create a cause and effect
graphic organizer that explains the sequence of
events that occurs when the neuron sends
messages through the nervous system to the
brain.
* Locate a diagram/image of the brain and label
the following parts:
> Cerebrum
> Brain Stem

how the heart helps the blood flow through the
arteries, capillaries, and veins in order to keep the
human body alive. Use at least 6-8 sentences to
explain this process.
* Locate a diagram of the human heart, add it to
your PowerPoint slide, and label each of its
chambers.
