Direct Instruction Lesson Plan

I.

Describe the Class:


18 Students in 2nd grade, 2 students with a learning disabled, 4 students that are gifted and 1
student that is a second language learner.

II.

Subject/Skills:
Science/Planets

III. Objective(s):
Students will be able to explain the solar system planets and be able to complete the
activity on Planet identification solar system activity with their shoulder partner.
IV. Procedures:
1.

State the objective/orient student to the lesson: Teacher will ask students to name off as
many planets as they Know. Teachers will tell class that we are going to be learning about
planets and list them (Uranus, Saturn, Venus, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter). Teacher will
explain the Solar System planets using PowerPoint.

2.

Review Prerequisites: Teacher will review skilled learned from previous lesson on solar
system vocabulary. Teacher will explain that we have gone over a few of the planets and
will be going more in depth. Students will write definition using vocab words in their
science book that were in last weeks solar system vocabulary and then students will help
teacher come up with definitions for the anchor charts of pervades knowledge.

3.

Modeling: Teacher will show PowerPoint. After PowerPoint teacher will then show and
model how the activity is completed which is planet identification solar system. Teacher
will hand out activity. Teacher will then get them started by completing the first question of
the activity making sure the class understands before going to work with their shoulder
partner. If students are showing difficulty teacher will pull them aside in small groups and
explain again. If teacher see that the students as a class is not understand, teacher will than
explain as a whole class.

Conducting learning probes: Teacher after each slide will ask questions to the class making
sure students understand the material that was said in slide. Teacher will also go to each
student when writing definition using vocab words in their science book that were in last
weeks solar system vocabulary to see if they are remembering those words. Teacher will
make sure students are working well together with their shoulder partner during activity on
planets identification solar system.

5.

Independent student practice: Students will work alone when completing vocabulary work.
Student will work with their shoulder partners during the activity on planets identification.

V. Materials:
Teacher will be using PowerPoint to explain about the solar system planets. Student will use
science text book, print out of activity on planet identification solar system, sheet of paper
and pencil.
VI. Grouping Structures:
Students will be working by themself in the first half of the lesson finding and writing
definition using vocab words in their science book. Second half of the lesson students will
be working with their shoulder parent answering the question in the activity on planet
identification solar system
VII. Modifications:
Teacher will go to each student to make sure everyone understands the lesson and activity.
Teacher will make sure that students with a learning disabled, gifted and second language
learners are activity involved in the lesson and make changes when needed with shoulder
partner, Also, making sure all question are being answered.
VIII. Assessment:
Teacher will be able to know how well the students are doing by their answers when
answering the questions about the PowerPoint during the lesson and writing definition
using vocab words in their science book. Teacher will also know when grading the activity
on planet identification solar system at a 100%. Teacher will review lesson on planets next
science time to make sure of understanding.
