Jacob Marion Smith was born about 1826 in Franklin County Virginia. He is the
son of Henry Smith and Rebecca Picklesimer. Jacob Marion Smith along with his
mother and father moved to Cabell County Virginia before 1840. On May 20th
1847 in Barboursville Virginia Jacob enlisted to the Army. This is where he
received his nickname Mexico. In July 1861 he commanded the Wayne County
Militia in a skirmish against the Union Army at Barboursville Virginia. In August
of 1861 Mexico Smith commanded a group of southerners in a battle against
Yankee Jim. Using only a broadsword he forced Yankee Jim to garrison himself in
the Wayne County Court House for 3 days. Jacob Marion Smith had 11 Children
with his first cousin Elizabeth Jane Smith daughter of John Shockey and Hannah
Smith. Five of their children were sons.
