the colors of objects in our environment through
discussion when we finish the book. We will first
discuss the things that Pete the Cat stepped in in the
environment around him. We will then talk about the
different things in our environment. Finally, we will
examine what colors each of those objects are and
what our shoes might look like if we were to step on
that object.

Shoes found at: https://youtu.be/IU-3r6s-rtA

Instructional Procedures
a. Introduction
i. First, I am going to introduce the book Pete the Cat I
Love My White Shoes. I will do a read aloud with the
whole class allowing time for answering questions
and discussion about the story.
ii. Second, I will play the story on YouTube so the
children can enjoy the text with the moving
animations.
iii. Third, I will talk with the class about the different
objects that are in our environment. Some we may
see every day and others only sometimes or maybe
not at all.
iv. Fourth, the class and I will discuss the colors of those
objects in our environment and what colors we think
they would turn our shoes if we stepped in them.
v. Fifth, I will give the students a picture of a shoe. With
this shoe the students will color it according to what
they stepped in.
vi. Sixth, the students are to write at the bottom of their
shoe I Love My ____ Shoes and cut it out.
b. Development
i. From this activity the students will be able to identify
different objects in our environment and identify the
colors of those objects.
c. Closure
i. To close this lesson with my students I will have the
students gather around in a circle and re-create the
original story with the students shoes that they
made. We would go around the circle and give each
student a part in the story. This is a fun way for the
students to show their classmates what they made
while also relating it back to the story.

Objectives

a. Students will be able to name different things in our

environment
i. After we read Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes,
the class and I will talk about all the things he
stepped in. I will then introduce to the class the idea
of our environment and how all the things Pete
stepped in are in our environment. I would then
provide the students a few other examples of things
in the environment. I would have the students talk

amongst themselves to come up with more ideas of

what is in our environment. I would then have the
students share their ideas aloud.
b. Students will be able to identify the colors of things in our
environment
i. As we are discussing the things we see in our
environment I will ask the students what color(s)
each of the things we talk about are.

Interdisciplinary Connections
a. The students are using their creative skills to connect

Language Arts with Visual Arts. As a class we are reading a

story and creating an art piece based off of the book. At
the end of the project the children are re-creating the
original story with their new creations. Thus once again
connecting their artwork back to the original text. This
lesson also connects Language Arts with Science. The
students are learning about the things in their environment
by observing what Pete the Cat stepped in and by choosing
something of their own to step in.

Standards

Assessment

a. As the students are working I will be walking around to

make sure that they are all on task. I will confer quickly
with each student to make sure that their shoe looks like
they stepped in the object that they chose. The students
will be graded on if the shoe is colored to match the object
they chose and if they participated in the recreation of the
story at the end.

VII. Adaptations

a. For those students who need additional assistance I will

provide them with coloring utensils that are larger so they
are easier to hold. I may also cut the shoe out for them if
they have difficulty using scissors.
b. For students who are done early I will allow them to go
over to the book nook. There they can read quietly or with
a partner until everyone is finished with their project.
