A Message from Hugh Gloster, Superintendent of Schools, SD 23 Central Okanagan
The Central Okanagan School District takes great pride in welcoming you to one of the nations premier athletic events. The
Capri Insurance KSS Best of the West Volleyball Tournament is the largest tournament of its kind, with 80 teams from all
over British Columbia and Western Canada.
We would like to wish you all a very warm Okanagan welcome on behalf of our entire district, which represents 22,000
students and more than 2,500 staff members working at our 42 different schools. During the Best of the West weekend,
however, all attention is focused on the amazing talent that appears on the courts at Kelowna Secondary School.
Enjoy your time in Kelowna, good luck and congratulations to all teams participating in this years tournament. Hopefully,
when you reflect back on this weekend in the months and years to come, it will be a very memorable event.

Welcome to Kelowna Secondary Schools annual KSS Best of the West Volleyball Tournament. This tournament highlights
many exceptional matches and events, from the Recreation Leadership Crazy Owl Contest to the dazzling display of
volleyball skills, athleticism and strategies in the games. The highlight for our school is to host so many outstanding teams
from near and far, while competing against the best teams in Western Canada.
We wish competitors all the best in the tournament and we hope you enjoy your experiences as much as we enjoy having you
join us for this annual event. Have fun, play well and , may you take home as many great memories as possible.

A Message from Tony Sodaro, Chairman, Tournament Organizing Committee

On behalf of the 2015 Tournament Committee, it gives me great pleasure to welcome all of you to the 2015 KSS Best of the
West. Sr. Boys & Sr. Girls Volleyball Championships. I would like to give a sincere thank you to our dedicated tournament
committee, whose efforts have made this tournament one of Canadas biggest and best ever! Further more, KSS would like

our goal that this Best of the West tournament will be a showcase of superb volleyball, school spirit, and fair play. We know

Former KSS Owl Marisa Field is
on her seventh tour of duty as a
middle blocker with the Canadian
National Womens Volleyball
Team. Marissa played middle fo
the KSS Owls during the She is
currently playing professional
volleyball in Sinsheim, Germany.

Kobi Christensen Power Hitter 2006 2008

Kobi Christensen has recently finished her
final year at Northern Arizona University.
She was a fouth year starter and team
captain for the Lumberjacks and she has
been named Big Sky Conference Player of
the Week 4 times and Player of the Month
twice. She was selected as the MVP for
the 2011 Fiesta Bowl. Kobi helped the
Owls capture their first of 4 UBCO Titles.
Chandler Proach - Setter 2006 2009 Chandler & Kailyn are in their final season with
Kailyn Jones - Libero 2006 - 2009
the UBCO Heat. Chandler will be the starting
Kaitlyn Given Power 2009 - 2011
setter for this year's squad, while Kailyn will be
the starting Libero. Kaitlyn Given will once
again be battling as a starting power hitter for the
heat These three players brought the Owls to
their first UBC, TWU & UBCO Championships
along with 5 Best of the West Titles. These
ladies helped bring home the Owls first Bronze
medal at the BC Provincial Championships in
2009, and Kaitlyn Given was tournament MVP
in 2011 when the KSS Owls finally captured
their 1st Provincial Championship Title in over
50 years!

2015 KSS OWLS AAAA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

#1 Janel Filipiak : Janel is a cute girlie who wishes she could cure
world hunger by using her singing powers. She kills it on the volleyball
court with her fast swing but her favorite position is libero. She
secretly loves Germany and falls for all those German boys. Her
favorite thing about Germany is definitely the sausages. Follow us on

#2 Bianca Raiva : My name is Bianca Raiva, and I am an amazing setter. I can

bring the energy out on the. I'm loud and can talk a mile a minute. I give the
best pep talks and I always have your back. I like to spend most of my days
playing volleyball but always make time to be a genius on the side. I'm kind
of a big deal. I aspire to be a member of the senior boys football team and
my friends call me Beyonce behind my back.

#3 Denika Widmer: Denika Jo-Jo Widmer actually play quarterback on the

boys football team but plays libero on the girls volleyball team in her spare
time. Jojo loves picking up dumps from setters and getting lots of tips. She
prefers to pass balls with her face rather than her hands. After her failed
career as a Mexican dancer, Jojo has aspired to be a flight attendant and will
probably be coming in for a landing somewhere near you.

#4 Kenzie Gorjanc: This little wanderer has been trying to sabotage Denika
for starting libero. With killer dives and amazing digs, Kenzie has been killing
it this season. She is wild and crazy, always the first to volunteer for fun
things like touch 10. She loves to hug so watch your back or shell latch on
and never let go. Its actually how she got spot on the team (by hugging the
competition to death)

#5 Quinci Birker: This big pine rider specialized in eating copious amounts of
hot dogs and her favorite color is black. She's not the worst player, she loves
to read for pleasure and she recently met a prospective boyfriend. She loves
watching him rap battle in the MPR. This girls got some big hits but not as big
as Ellies. Follow @kssgirlsvolleyball on insta for more

#6 Sandie Kent: Sandie loves to rip big ones on the court and sometimes it
scares the other team away. She specializes in setter dumps. This setter\right
side hitter has always got her foot on the gas and when this strong player is on
the court you can smell the spirit when you walk in the gym.

#7 Sarah Watson Sarah Watson has been smashing the veebs ever since she
was a little gaffer. You may know her as the chill smarty in your classes but on
the court, Sarah is a ferocious beast that loves to pound balls. Not only does
Sarah love to knock down the competition in volleyball, Sarah uses a
screaming technique to distract the other teams. That is why in every action
photo, Sarah's mouth is always wide open to psych out her enemies. Get ready
for Asian invasion because this girl is ready to yell her opponents off the court!

#8 Jayne Reid: Not only is Jayne Reid good with balls, but she's also very skilled
at knitting! In past years Jayne was actually in the libero position but Sodaro
thought he would give someone else a chance this year.. Many of you are
wondering how tall Jayne really is, but yes, she really is 6 foot 8!!

#9 Brooklynn Norman: This waist-training setter loves whipped cream and

dumps. She has a habit of laughing at everything and only doing things in
fours. Brooklynn prefers to be called Ashley and she loves hockey. Her favorite
team is the Penticton Vees. Although she never smiles at you, we promise
shes having a good time.

#10 Carly Tremblay: Carly is from Melbourne, Australia, but lost her accent 3
years ago in a boating accident. She has 5 kids and hates them all, but secretly
wishes for more. Carly may look sweet, but believe us, she smashes the ball
so hard on the court her opponents want to cry. Follow Carly on Instagram
@carlytremblay and her team @kssgirlsvolleyball. She loves to flaunt her pink
shoes and take a big swing at the ball- so watch out! Seriously.

#11 Sam Temme: This nerdy middle nerd is a nerd. With a secret love for a
certain member of the boys volleyball team, she is a nerd. Loves to fight
people and has gotten carded numerous times. Loves loud obnoxious
cheering and she is a nerd. Loves hitting power and has an unreal Miranda
Sings impression. Also she is a nerd. And no, she didnt poop herself.

#12 Natalie Demers: Natalie Demers is an ace serving, ball crushing, dimepassing player that will kill it on every contact! This girl is unlike any player
you've ever seen, due to her ninja like capabilities. If this girls diving a tuck and
roll is soon to follow! This grade 11 gal isn't the worst! And don't let her size
fool you! She may be light as a feather but she packs quite a punch on and off
the court.

#13 Zoyva Wasylyk: This is Zovya but you can call her the wall cause that's all
you will be seeing when you can't get past her block. She play's middle and
bounces t-line balls all match long. She was a professional snowboarder but
chose her path in the way of volleyball instead. She loves laughing and
hanging with her friends on and off the court. Follow her ways on her Insta

#14 Ellie Hottie McCarthy: Hello fellas! I am a 62 middle. I pride myself in

always being the best on the team. Sodaro always says, "If it wasn't for that
massive face plant/concussion at the pep rally, I'd be the captain. We can't
invite boys to our games anymore because they stop watching the game and
only look at butt. Speaking of sweet booty...Parker Simson will you go out to
lunch with me? Come hungry! Go follow @kssgirlsvolleyball on instagram!!

#15 Sadie Taylor-Parks: Sadie is really out of control. Last week Sodaro had to
sub her out for being too good. She is ruthless on the court and off. Dont be
fooled by her adorable, bambi-like appearance. She will take you down if you
get in her way and shes been known to sabotage team members by locking
them out of the gym or stealing the second ball and making perfect sets. Keep
and eye out for this powerful middle and watch your back.
