Know and understand the community in which we work

Self-Evaluation: 3
Purpose : so that practitioners can work with individuals and communities to identify and plan action based on knowledge and some and some of
the internal and external influences at work
Context: understanding the context within which our work takes place will be based upon our knowledge of social, political and wider
environmental influences on communities. Competent CLD practitioners are aware of the relevant global and local factors that impact on the
community in which they work.

I have various presenting styles, Im most comfortable with informal

I find speak to large auditoriums difficult.

Id find speak to young people formally more difficult.
3
I get enthusiastic when faced with challenges and have a solution
focused mind. My responses to challenges are creative. I also like to
motivate other in this situation which requires getting them on board or
creating their own solutions.
My weakness here would be to keep a relative amount of focus on the
human value and dont rush away with the process
3
I think I have some positive skills in identifying the underlying group
dynamic. When identifying differing views. I recognise I need to
improve my ability to have all voices considered, especially when trying
to move an agenda along.
1
I need to develop my understanding and recognition of conflict in
settings where this is not necessarily clear. Understanding my role in
progressing the resolution of conflict. Also recognition of when conflict
cannot be resolved and how to deal with this.

barriers to achieving this.

I have completed group facilitation in the past as well as facilitated

3
I recognise the aspects of community work that are not rich when
elements of the community are not available in consultation or access
to facilities and activates. My historical equalities work has developed
my thinking to recognise exclusion for a range of issues (not just
discrimination over protected characteristics)
I need the opportunity to practice this in all my CLD work in the future.
My weaknesses would include the elements of ensuring existing
participants are open to being inclusive and how to challenge this
appropriately
3
I feel as comfortable in situations with the highest level government
officials as with individuals or groups of people in crisis. I feel capable of
interacting on their agendas and hearing what they want to
communicate with each other and to external bodies.
I feel I need an opportunity to practice this in CLD setting especially with
young people.
3
I have been involved in many decision making structures, I have been
the officer for strategy and delivery groups. I also generate ideas when
faced with problems, also recognise when my ideas are not appropriate
or sustainable but enjoy the motivation if generating ideas in others.
I feel I have to do this with youth groups and other learners to hone my
skills appropriate for CLD. This in particular to encourage
empowerment for learners.
1
I feel I know what change is and what it looks like. I also recognise
methods to campaign for change. Quietly or loudly in communities.

I need to be able to practice this in CLD setting while promoting equality

Partnership working I feel confident in the collaboration of shared and

My main limitation would be the bringing community members into the

Support community
participation in
partnership and
collaborative working

3
I firmly believe in community partition. The best outcomes in my
practice around partnership working has been where communities are
involved. The recognition that tensions and difficulties experienced by
professionals can bring additional challenges to this relationship.
I have recently began to explore my relationship with the need for
process over people and consider how to incorporate many voices into
collaborative working.
3
I had felt I was deepening my competence here but during the selfevaluation I recognise I need more understanding to be able to
articulate it to others. I had a greater presumption people knew what
the CLD practitioner role was. Im finding it more difficult to navigate to
professionals and to a degree community members in the field.

4
I have established relationships with partners and community members.
I have assisted groups to establish their own group roles. I find that
challenges lie in being able to not take leadership rather than finding
opportunities to take it on.
I need to deepen my competence further by examples of supporting
others leadership.

Evaluate and inform practice

Self-Evaluation: 4
Purpose : so that robust evidence can sustain, inform, influence and change policy and practice
Context: Competent CLD Practitioners need to build evidence-based practice based on an appreciation of the value of research and evaluation.
They need knowledge of the methods and techniques commonly used and an understanding of the current issues and challenges in evaluation,
quality assurance and performance measures.

I feel confident I can identify as well as create methods to evaluate
experiences and processes. I need to evidence this in a CLD setting. I
need to explore and strengthen methods I currently use to consider
creative methods to gather evaluation responses
3
Social research and methodologies are familiar to me. However I need
to develop a greater understanding of the community in which I am
practicing and consider best methods to generate indolent in the
research and evaluation of my work.

I thrive on discussion and in particular on topics that are difficult to
incorporate into my thinking and practice.
I have a growing competence in self-reflective practice where I am
exploring my assumptions, where these came from and how they may
cause particular difficulties of influences to my practice.

3
I have experience of measuring outcomes as well as reading outcome
measurements from peers.
I need to consider CLD framework and objectives to identify
appropriate outcomes and recognise impact in the communities I am
practicing in.
3
I am confident I can report on findings competently while recognising
my own bias and reducing this as far as possible. I am also comfortable
presenting my findings to a range of audiences.
I need to develop and greater understanding of the communities I and
working in and how best to present findings back to them. I feel
weakest and informing young people.
