Stay connected with the AIG Department:
Remind (formerly Remind101) offers teachers a free, safe and simple way to
instantly text students & parents. Many of your childs teachers will be using this
resource to connect with you. You can sign up for multiple classes and receive
information from many sources. The Lucas Middle AIG department would like for
you stay connected with us through the Remind service. Please sign up using the
information below and we will send you information about school-wide AIG
meetings, academic competition dates, and outside service options to help further
your childs education.

Meetings Differentiated Education Plan Meeting:


Our first AIG parent night entitled AIG The Place to Be! was held on the dates
below.
Sixth and Seventh Grade - Monday, September 21st from 6:00 to 7:00
Eighth Grade - Monday, September 28th from 6:00 to 7:00
At the meeting, we covered the services that will be offered to your child throughout
the years as well as discussed all activities/programs available to our students this
coming year and upcoming summer (Duke TIP, etc). If you were unable to attend
this meeting, please feel free to schedule an individual conference with the AIG
Facilitator through her email at amber.longee@dpsnc.net. Also, be on the lookout
for your childs AIG paperwork. DEP forms will be coming home the week of October
19th and will need to be signed and returned to Mrs. Longee. These forms are
required to be placed in your childs AIG folder and are used as documentation of
the services that students receive while at Lucas Middle School.

Art Showcase
Art Showcase is a competition that recognizes both the best individual artists and
best art programs in North Carolina schools. An unlimited number of students in
each school may participate in the school-level competition. Students are presented
with a prompt and given about one month to create their submission. This years
prompt is beauty discovered. Media categories include painting, drawing, collage,
photography, and other creative efforts. Electronic copies of submissions are sent to
NCASA and forwarded to judges. Submissions from top teams and students from
each category advance to the State Finals and are evaluated by judges in a live

exhibition. Students are not required to attend the regional or state finals for this
competition. Their artwork will be photographed and sent to the judges through email.
Deadlines:
Friday, October 16th: return this form to Mrs. Longee if you are interested in
participating
Tuesday, October 27th: Completed artwork is due for the school-wide
competition
Tuesday, November 3rd: Regional Competition (artwork sent electronically)
Saturday, December 5th: State Final Competition (if a students artwork
makes it this far, they are not required to attend)

Twelve
Twelve is a knowledge-based academic competition that challenges teams of
students to answer questions covering a variety of subject areas. The competition is
based primarily on the core curriculum. Twelve is an original competition developed
by the North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities (NCASA).
Each Twelve team is comprised of a group of students from a single school. Each
school may send one team to the competition. Twelve students from each team will
compete in twelve of the following topics:
Middle School Wildcard Topics (two in each competition)
NC Geography
NC Native Americans
NC State Government
NC State Symbols
NC History
NC Sports
NC Current Events
NC Colleges and Universities
Middle School Primary Topics (all ten in each competition)
Earth Science - mostly advanced MS earth science questions with a few high
school level questions added
Life Science - mostly advanced MS life science questions with a few high
school level questions added
Mathematics - Math 7+, Common Core 1, Word Problems, plus a few more
advanced questions
Writing - Grammar plus literary terms and devices
Literature - Popular young adult fiction
US History - includes historic documents and speeches
World History
Technology - PC's, internet, handheld devices, social media, etc.

Physical Education / Sports - Includes health and sports rules but does not
include sports teams and personalities
Arts and Media - Popular culture including music, movies, television, etc.

Parent Conferences
Teachers will begin setting up individual conferences for all students in the
upcoming weeks. However, if at any time you would like to set up a conference
with your childs teacher, please feel free to contact those teachers or the AIG
Facilitator, Amber Longee. You may also set-up a conference with the AIG Facilitator
in order to discuss specific needs and program goals. To set-up a conference with
the AIG Facilitator please email amber.longee@dpsnc.net and your email will be
returned with available dates and times within 24 hours.
