PERFORMANCE EXPECTATION: The students will write a letter to William Penn thanking
him for the land he has found, explaining why they enjoy Pennsylvania, and explaining how it is
different than their homelands.
ASSESSMENT of Performance Expectation: The students will be assessed via a letter to
William Penn. In this letter they will thank him for Pennsylvania, explain how beautiful it is, and
explain how it is different from back home. The assessment directions can be found below. The
writing will be graded via a rubric which can also be found below.
Imagine you are a new settler to Pennsylvania from England. Write a letter to William
Penn thanking him for finding this new colony. Explain to Mr. Penn why you are so thankful to
be living in Pennsylvania. Be sure to include information about the land in Pennsylvania. Be sure
to also include why life here is different than life back at home. Lastly, make sure to brainstorm
ideas and create a rough draft in your writers notebook. Once that is approved, you will create a
final draft on aged part.
