Practice Scholastic Aptitude Test

9th, 10th, and 11th grade

What is the PSAT and why is it important?

The PSAT is a nationwide, multiple-choice test taken by about 3.4 million high school
students every yearmostly sophomores and juniors. A great primer for the SAT and
even the ACT, the PSAT includes math, critical reading and writing questions. However,
with no algebra II or essay section, it is shorter than the SAT and ACT.
The PSAT doesn't count towards your college admissions. However, it is the qualifying
test for National Merit Scholarships. That means that the highest scoring students may
win scholarship money. So while you shouldn't stress about the PSAT, you also shouldn't
ignore it.
What specifically does the PSAT test?
Similar to the SAT, the PSAT has three sections that cover Math, Critical Reading, and
Writing. However, it is shorter than the SAT taking (a mere) 2 hours and 10 minutes.

* New this year- PSAT 8/9 (9th graders only):
The PSAT 8/9 is a test that will help you and your teachers figure out what you need to
work on most so that youre ready for college when you graduate from high school. It
tests the same skills and knowledge as the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and PSAT 10 in a way
that makes sense for your grade level. The PSAT 8/9 establishes a baseline measurement
of your college and career readiness as you enter high school. It also gives you a chance
to preview the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and PSAT 10 and connect to AP courses. When you get
your test results, connect your College Board and Khan Academy accounts to get free
personalized study recommendations. If youre in ninth grade, your test results will let
you know if you should check out AP World History or AP European History. AP Potential
also helps schools grow their AP programs. To see the test design follow this link:
