STANDARD LESSON PLAN FORMAT

I.

Describe the Class


There are 20 1st grade students in the classroom. The lesson duration is about
40 minutes long.

II.

Subject/Skill
Science (Living things vs. non-living things)
Students discover differences between living things and non-living things.
Students observe listed items and classify between living things and nonliving things based on their observations. Students find common criteria from
each category.

III.

Objective(s)

After completing the lesson, students will be able to distinguish


between living things and non-living things.

After completing the lesson, students will be able to list each


characteristic of living things and non-living things.

After completing the lesson, students will be able to understand living


things grow, eat, and reproduce.

IV.

Procedures
1. Teacher tells class the goal of this lesson. Today, we are going to discover
differences between living things and non living things and find the
features of them.
2. Teacher asks class Can anybody tell me something that is living? and
then, asks again, Can anybody tell me something that is non-living?
3. Teacher gives the scientific definition of living things (anything that is or
has ever been alive) and non-living things (anything that is not now nor
has ever been alive)
4. Every student gets a picture of rock, glue, baseball, teddy bear, fish in a
bowl, flower, turtle and tree.
5. Students individually divide listed items by living things and non-living
things based on their background knowledge.
6. After students divide their items, teacher asks class, Did you find any
common features of all living things and non-living things? and How
were the living things different from the nonliving things?
7. Induce students' understanding by asking: Do all living things eat? Do
all living things grow?, Do all living things reproduce?
8. End the lesson by asking students whether they want to make changes the
original list that they divided, if they put an item on the wrong side.
9. At the end of the lesson, students complete the given worksheet based on
the lesson to assess understanding

Materials
20 pictures each of a rock, glue, baseball, teddy bear, fish in a bowl, flower,
turtle and tree.

VI.

Grouping Structures
Students will be separated into 5 groups of four.

VII.

Modifications
Basically, the activity will be conducted individually. However, if there is a
student who falls behind, students from same group can help.

VIII.

Assessment
At the end of the lesson, students complete the given worksheet based on the
lesson to assess understanding.
