Assume the triangle is revolved about y.

a justification using a derivative test for global extrema would complete this

a) local max.: x=-1; local min.: x=3

b) local min.: x=4; inflection point: x=1

While the final answers seem correct; it is dangerous to simply set the
derivative equal to zero. The derivative must CHANGE sign at local extrema.
Justifications are missing.

(I'm not sure I understood the question properly.)


Set the distance Jane rows x, and the distance she walks 6-y.
This way, you form a right triangle with 2mi, x, and y.
