Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas addresses his
dying father and emphasizes on the subject of death. At the end of their lives, old men
should resist death; they should rage against the dying of light. He wrote this with a
slew of emotions to encourage people to cling to life. Even though death is inevitable,
people shouldnt simply accept it, the should fight it. At the end of the poem, he urges
his father to battle and try to beat the odds. Overall, Dylan Thomas message is to not
take deathlying down, but it also is about living a strong and fulfilled life.
Poetry can come in different forms. For example, song lyrics incorporate
feelings and ideas that are tied together through a specific style and rythym just like
poetry. Poetry and song lyrics can create a literacy landscape for readers through its
emotional attatchment. It may even differ from the readers lived experiences. Readers
become engulfed in the meaning behind the text and it allows the reader to experience
the deeper aspects of life or a certain situation. Poetry and song lyrics can be very
powerful, which can draw people towards or push them away from it.
Although poetry and prose are both ways of communicating a message,
poetry is more complex. Prose is very straightforward and is a regular form of written or
spoken language. It is structured ideas are arranged in sentences that are then formed
into paragraphs, there are no line breaks, and the first word of every sentence is
capitalized. Poetry, on the other hand, can be very intricate. Along with poetry comes
emotions and underlying themes that can sometimes be difficult to understand. Poetry
requires you to think outside the box and dig deeper into the text. It is an artistic way of
expressing something and the language is far more decorated than that of prose. The
ideas are arranged in lines and then formed into stanzas, and poetry uses line breaks for
several reasons to continue a pattern or rythym or to emphasize an idea. Typically, the

first word of every line is capitalized but the rules are often broken. Poetry can also be
shaped into anything the poet wants it to be and its structure can be very loose. Poetry
can range from two lines to two pages, have no capitalization and have made-up words,
like Dr. Seuss. Both poetry and prose can be difficult to understand. Poetry seems more
difficult to many because the words weigh heavier with deep meanings that people could
not express themselves.
Poetry and song lyrics are an expression of emotion. In order to read a poem, you
have to engage not only your brain, but your feelings as well. This is because poetry and
song lyrics often include metaphorical phrases that mean something completely
different than what it says or how it is perceived. This is where you, the reader, has to
use the context of the poem and decipher what the underlying meaning is. These
phrases often tie into the theme or themes of the poem; most poems usually have
several themes that the author is trying to convey. Our understanding of these themes
has been altered by poetry and song lyrics because people are very literal. People have a
tendency to communicate written or spoken in literal terms. The same goes for
when people analyze poetry; they try to extract its literal meaning instead of delving
deeper. Song lyrics are often easier for people to decipher because it comes more
naturally to them. They relate to the emotion transferred in the tone of the singer.
Poetry is usually taught in classrooms whereas song lyrics are not taught, they are
listened to on a daily basis as an escape, for relaxation, or to celebrate. Song lyrics are
written in a language that people can understand more easily.
Poetry and song lyrics are very rich in meaning and emotions. Song lyrics
may not seem like a form of poetry, but both have an underlying meaning and theme
that the author is trying to express through a certain rythym. Many people think poetry

is hard to understand, but it stretches and exercise your brain. Thinking beyond the
literal sense pushes the reader or listener to open up their mind and dig deeper to grasp
the hidden messages.
