Focus/Anticipatory Set:
Ask students to tell me what holiday just passed on Monday? Introduce Christopher
Columbus by asking students to tell me a few things that they already know about
Christopher Columbus.
Relevancy
As a class, we will complete a Graphic Organizer. We will discuss what we will be
putting in the circles on the organizer.
Explanation/Teaching Strategies & Modeling
Students will watch a Brainpop Jr. Video over Christopher Columbus
As a class, students will be handed an index card with true and false facts about
Christopher Columbus. The students will go around reading the card in their hand and
all of the students will put thumbs up if the statement is true, and if the statement is
false, students will put their thumbs down.
Teaching: Checking for Understanding
Students will complete an interactive easy quiz and a hard quiz over the video on
Brainpop and we will discuss the answers as we go.
Questioning strategies:
I will ask the students to tell me what they already know about Christopher Columbus
(before we start)
I will ask the students to give me facts about Christopher Columbus that the video told
us.
Guided Practice
As a class, students will be handed an index card with true and false facts about
Christopher Columbus. The students will go around reading the card in their hand and
all of the students will put thumbs up if the statement is true, and if the statement is
false, students will put their thumbs down. We will create a Graphic Organizer with true
facts. The graphic organizer will be the guide for independent practice.

Students will write a six sentence paragraph with a hook, four supporting details, and a
wrap up sentence, about what they have learned from the lesson.
Closure
I will go around and ask students to tell me one thing they learned from the lesson and
hand the student a Sailboat to eat.
