What is a void?
A void is an empty space, a vacuum; or a feeling of
emptiness, loneliness or loss. So what does the title
mean? How is it possible to touch a void?
The story involves Joe and his climbing partner, Simon
Yates, who were nearing the end of a climb in the
Peruvian Andes, when this terrible accident occurred.
The passage provides a focus on an extreme sport at a
life or death moment. It raises many issues:
What makes people participate in activities like this?
What should one do when faced with a moral dilemma
like Simons?
Is self-preservation more important than friendship? Note
that these two are completely on their own.
Language
Though both accounts are very similar in style,
there are significant differences.
Both accounts have:
use of first person narrative
narrative structure, but evaluation and analysis
of the significance of what is happening is
integrated into the storytelling
use of direct speech to convey the immediacy of
thought Youve had it, matey. Youre dead
and to bring in other perspectives Im dead.
Everyone said it.if theres just two of you a
broken ankle could turn into a death sentence.
