Technology to Support Assessment

The new technology devices and software are making teaching much
easier than a few decades ago. In the 70s and 80s the technology that
teacher had to teach students were paper and pencils. Today teachers have
a wide variety of not only technology devices but different tools that will help
them to do an outstanding teaching job. Back in the 80s teachers did not
have all the web tools that they have today to create their own assessment
quizzes. Today teachers have benchmark, polldaddy, ESGI, Quest base and
the many more that are out there. All these tools have one thing in common
and that is to help students and teacher succeed and have better outcomes.

Technology to Facilitate Ongoing Efforts to Assess Student

Learning
The technology, tools and websites that are available to help teachers and
students are used as a guidance to help succeed in class. For example if I
would like to teach pre-k to kindergarten I would use ESGI web tool to create
specific quizzes to help me guide myself were each of my students need the
most work. This web tools make teaching much easier because it help the
teacher to see where he or she need to make changing in their teaching
lessons. This assessment tools can help the parents understand how their
child is doing in class. The students have the flexibility of taking quizzes at
their convince from home and parents can help them. Most of all this

assessments really help the teachers to help their students in specific lesson
that they are failing.

Polldaddy
Polldaddy is a free site where teachers can go and create a variety of
quizzes, surveys and many other options that can help their students? What
I like about polldaddy is that I was able to find a few tutorials to show me
how to create my quiz. I like the many features that can be add when you
design your on quiz for your students. It is easy for students to log in to and
they can even do it from home. Teacher can even share their polldaddy
quizzes with different social media sites, for example Facebook and Twitter.

ESGI
ESGI is a software to help teachers who teach perk to first grade. They
offer a sixty day free trial after that they have different packages. With this
software teacher cannot only create their quizzes but it can also be used for
populating personalized parent letters & flash cards, identifying individuals or
groups for targeted instruction, and customizing the learning environment to
promote focus areas for academic
growth.(https://www.esgisoftware.com/)Parents and students can both
benefit from this software. This software is easy for students to log into but
off course with a password. It can be use at school and at home.

Smarter Balanced
The work of Smarter Balanced is guided by the belief that a highquality assessment system can provide information and tools for teachers
and schools to improve instruction and help students succeed regardless of
disability, language or subgroup. Smarter Balanced involves experienced
educators, researchers, state and local policymakers and community groups
working together in a transparent and consensus-driven
process.(www.smarterbalanced.com ) This software is not only for the
elementary school levels but it can also be beneficial for the upper school
levels. Teacher can benefit from using the common core standards tools and
resources to create assessments to help their students.

(Formative and Summative Assessments)

Formative assessment teacher use it to guide themselves by asking
the students a few questions before beginning a new lesson. For example if I
need my students to write a summary on birthdays. I would first ask my
students to draw a circle on a paper and write a few words that are related to
birthday. This way I can tell how many students understand what I am
looking for in the summary that they will have to write. Now were as
summative assessment is a test that is done by using technology do see if

the students learn what was discuss in a particular lesson. The software
would help the teacher to create a specific quiz or test to find out how many
students comprehend the lesson.

Pros and Cons of using Technology to Facilitate Assessment

Technology assessments are made in a neutral and objective manner
to assist in a decision process.(Deal, W.F., 2002, p17) By using technology in
our assessment it facilitates the decisions we need to make after evaluating
the data. Once the data has been analyzed we have a better understanding
were we need to make changing to assists the students that could be at risk
of failing in class. It can as well help us the teachers to change the way we
teach, plan weekly lessons. Assessments can also be beneficial for the
parents because it give them a better understanding what is taught in class
and how their child is doing. Teachers and parents can have a better
understanding of the schools vision. Some of the cons that can happen
when using technology for conducting assessments could be when the
school does not have enough devices for the students, the software is not up
to date and the computers do not work. For an educational technology to be
adopted effectively, the pedagogical model it supports should also be
adopted. (Lasry, N., Charles, E. Whittaker, C., Dedic, H., &Rosenfields, S.
2013, p241) When teachers and administration do not have the same vision
it will not work.

Conclusion
Technology makes a difference when applying in a wisely manner.
Whether we use it for conducting assessments, teaching, or for other
educational options it benefits the students and teachers. It help the teacher
to see who and where the changing will be done. Parents have a better
understanding of the school and teachers educational vision. The school
district can see were the administration is lacking and can help the schools
have better outcomes. Tools and software were create for a good purpose
and schools should learn how to embrace them to assist students in various
ways. After all we are teaching students of the 21st century.
