TODAY'S E-PAPER

First Year:
The two main hurdles for applying to any university is GRE and IELTS/TOEFL/PTE. I say
hurdles because every university asks for the scores of these tests when you apply.
However, you can convert these hurdles into opportunities for improving your
communication skills if you integrate the preparation for these tests into your
academics.
For an engineering student, the quantitative reasoning part of GRE is not a major
challenge since a majority of the questions are of 10th standard-level. So, the most
intimidating part is verbal section of GRE and the language-proficiency tests
because they demand a higher degree of expertise in English, which is generally
lacking among Indian students, thanks to emphasis on rote learning in our schools.
So, in addition to taking English subject and lab seriously in the first year, you need to
do research on the tests and develop your skills accordingly. For example, if you
decide to take IELTS, try to watch British films, sitcoms, songs, radio broadcasts, etc. If
its TOEFL, do the same but with the American ones. You can postpone your binge
watching and listening to summer holidays if you are short on time due to exams.
Second Year:
Now that you have spent one full year in learning English, you need to test your skills.
Take a few sample tests for GRE (in the official ETS PowerPrep tool) and
IELTS/TOEFL/PTE (a lot of them are available online). Once you are done with this, you
will get an idea as to where you stand i.e. whether you can prepare for the tests on
your own or require coaching. You need not decide immediately after taking these
mock tests, talk to a few seniors who have already taken these tests or going for
coaching for GRE or IELTS/TOEFL/PTE and find out how coaching helps or doesnt help.
You can post your queries on online student fora also.
Now, once you take a decision, start implementing it immediately (Maybe in the
second semester). So, if you want to take the help of a coaching institute, you
already have information regarding which one is the best. So, start going to classes.
If you decide to do it on your own, download preparation softwares available online
and buy the standard books necessary for preparation.
8 Note that you cannot take any of these tests without a valid Indian passport. So,
apply for a passport in the second year itself so that you can avoid the unnecessary
Tatkal charge and other headaches in third year, when you decide to take the
exams.
Third Year:
Make your preparation more rigorous in the first semester by revising what you have
already studied and taking as many mock tests as possible. Also, do a thorough
research on universities that suit your profile and budget. Be in touch with your
seniors who would be leaving to US for MS so that you can seek their help with your
admission process or request for accommodation for a few days before you join
your university in US.
One of the important parts of your application is recommendations from your
professors. You cannot approach your professors suddenly one day and ask for a
recommendation. So, choose 3-4 professors whose recommendation you wish to
seek and build a good rapport with them. Note that this cannot be done in a few
weeks time. So, start the exercise right from Day 1 of the third year (its actually
better if you start earlier).
Enter second semester and time has come to take the tests finally. You have the
passport, list of universities you wish to apply to and at least 1 year of preparation
behind you. Plan your exam at least a month in advance. In case you feel that it is
better to take the exam during summer holidays, do so. Sometimes getting a
GRE/TOEFL slot in Hyderabad may turn out to be difficult, so the earlier you plan the
better. For more information on Dos and Donts of booking test slots and being ready
for the exam day, visit our blogs on www.futureinusa.com/blog/.
Fourth Year:
Once the tests scores are out, the most important step i.e. applying to universities
begins. Note that 4th year could be quite an intensive one with respect to
academics. Youll notice that you no more have the time to hang out often with
your friends as you did in the previous years. This is because, you have subjects to
study, which may help you increase your overall percentage/CGPA, academic
project, which is very crucial when you are applying to a good university.
So, you may seek help of a good consultancy to assist you with the admission
process. Criteria for choosing a consultancy can be found in the blogs section of
www.futureinusa.com/blog/. While you focus on improving your profile, the
consultancy can help coordinate with the universities, including getting you a
scholarship/assistantship. They also make sure that you do not forget to send all the
required documents such as SoP, recommendation letters, bank statements,
transcripts, etc.
So, by the time you complete your fourth year, youll have the I-20s from universities
ready with you. Now, get ready for US visa. Take a few mock interviews (many
consultancies provide this service) so that you can gain confidence for attending
the real visa interview. Once your visa is ready, book flight tickets, do shopping,
apply for education loan if necessary, get the medical documents ready and get in
touch with the academic coordinator of the university you are going to join and
