Sociological Analysis of the short film, Love Has No Labels

This short film entitled, Love Has No Labels, is made by the Ad Council in
campaigning to stop prejudices and rethinking our bias. The film delivered a
deep message about diversity. It started with playing Macklemore and Ryan
Lewis song: Same love, in the background which connects deeply to the
message of the film. Two or three persons are standing at the back of an Xray scanner showing only their skeletons at first. No one would ever knew
who they were or what they look like until they reveal themselves by coming
out from the sides. Then they stand in front of the crowd and words are
projected from their backs saying, love has no age, gender, race, disability or
religion. In short, "love has no labels". The crowd was then overwhelmed and
was touched by what was shown. Talking about the song in the background,
the lyrics has a line which says And I cant change. Even if I tried, even if I
wanted to. This simply means that in our generation today, we cannot
change to what society expects us to be. We can only change ourselves
based on what our hearts desire. Being who we are is what keeps us human.
The video reminded us that we are all just human beings. We should
embrace diversity and put aside labels in the name of love since love doesn't
require any standards.

When viewing this film, Auguste Comte would study the light of positivism
and use the scientific methods in order to understand the invariant laws of
the social world. Comte would focus on social dynamics and analyze each of
the couple/people in the film who stood in front, studying how they
experience and have dealt with social change.
On Karl Marx view, he would take the approach of explaining social issues
through the perspective of conflict theory. He would go beyond analyzing the
people who stood in front and view society as a whole. He would identify
economic struggles and what the standard measurements set by society are.
He would also focus on social issues like, racism, ageism and other
prejudices and how these social issues would affect not only to the people in
the film who stood in front but also to other people.

mile Durkheim, in viewing this film, he would observe society as a

complex system and that the people in the film who stood in front must still
become a part of this system to have that sense of balance in the society.
Despite the social issues, these people are still considered individuals. These
people still have social statuses and roles which are needed to build a
society. Deviance could also be implied in interpreting Durkheims view to
this film. He would see how social issues challenge the peoples present view.

In my opinion, the most represented sociological paradigm to this short

film, Love Has No Labels, would be the conflict perspective/paradigm in

relation to how social issues, through power, coercion and authority, would
shape people. This short film wouldnt have been made if it werent for the
social issues or conflict existing in our society today. Symbolic interactionism
could also be seen in this video in a way that individuals would adjust to the
social norms and laws set by society. For example, on recent events, America
just legalized gay marriage to all states last June 26th of this year. This was
such a victory for the LGBT community. But back then, before it was
legalized, gay couples would have to get married in another state or country
that legalizes this kind of marriage or rather they would decide not to get
married instead due to the law.
