Lesson Introduction and material presentation: Introduce
the concept of adjectives and how they are words that are

used to describe a person, place or thing. Using the text
we are reading which would be, Because of Winn Dixie, we
will practice coming up with adjectives that could describe
a character or event in the book. By the end of this lesson
students will understand what an adjective is and how to
properly use one.

60 mins

The Lesson Structure: Activities


Using the smart board project photos of different
objects or people. Have students come up with
adjectives to describe them.
Introduce the programs AbcYa and Wordle as the
tools that will be used in todays presentations. A
short demo using the projector will give kids a
chance to see the tool in action.
Next come up with a list of characters from the
story and explain we how they will be using this tool
to create word collages of adjectives to describe
their character.
Partner students in groups of 2-3 using the random
name picker to ensure that there is no one left out
Also you can use the random name picker to assign
the characters to different groups to ensure that it
is equal
Using ipads, have groups chose the tools they wish
to use to create their word collage. I have narrowed
it down to two choices to that it is easier for the
students and teacher.

Closing/Assessment
The students will present their word collage of adjectives to
the class. The students and their partner will have to state the
character in which they chose and then explain why they chose
a few of the words to describe that particular character.
Homework
Depending when this lesson is taught they may have to go home
and read the next chapter. If the class has completed the book
then they would not have any homework.
