Shapes

Time: N/A
Duration: 25 mins

Learning Objective(s): The child will be enabled to:

Name 2D and 3D shapes square, rectangle, triangle, sphere and cylinder.
Identify these shapes in their surrounding environment.
Name these shapes in the medium of German.
Develop vocabulary of moving using directional words.
Explore spatial awareness through giving of directions.
Critically analyse the use of bluebot in the exploration of direction giving.
Resources/Materials/Equipment:
Bluebot
Maps (previously created)
Picture print outs from map
Matching worksheet
PowerPoint on shapes
Smartphone
Introduction:
Through use of PowerPoint, we will revise the shapes we included in our map. These
include a mixture of 2D and 3D shapes such as square, triangle, cylinder, circle and
rectangle.
The children will also find things in the classroom which are of these shapes to allow
visual awareness for the whole class as to what the shapes really look like.
As we are going through the shapes we will also revise the names of the shapes in
German, as we had learnt in our previous lesson and language lesson.
I will aid the children with prompts and flashcards for remembering the German words.
Development:
To ensure understanding of the shapes, their names and what they look like, children will
complete a short matching worksheet.
I will then introduce to the class the maze that we are going to be creating in the
classroom.
I will have images from their map placed around the classroom.
I will ask the children what kinds of directions we can move to get from image to image.
The vocabulary I want to elicit is words such as: straight, forwards, backwards, turn, right
and left.
I will ask children in pairs to lead their partner from one picture to another using the
vocabulary and giving directions.

I will demonstrate with 3-4 pairs.

Conclusion:
We will revise how bluebot works.
I will explain to the class that in groups they will be working with bluebot and getting him
to move around the map.
Within their groups children will make 2 teams, with one team creating a route challenge
for the other team i.e. get bluebot from one picture to another.
Children will work using the smartphones to give the commands to bluebot.
Following this, we will do a class review.
I will use higher and lower order questioning to see from the children what worked in the
lesson and what didnt.
