Wind Energy

How Does it Work?

For Wind Energy to be produced a machine called a turbine is used. Wind

turbines operate pretty simply
The energy in the wind turns two or three propeller-like blades around a
rotor.
The rotor is connected to the main shaft, which spins a generator to create
electricity.
The energy is then used as electricity to power everything from lights to
household appliances.

The Cost of Wind Energy

To buy and install a very small (<1-kW) off-grid
turbine can cost from $4,000 to $9,000, and a 100kW turbine can cost up to $350,000.
In Ontario for example, 4% of the power generated
is from wind energy, and yet it costs 20% of people
in live in Ontarios electrical bill.
Also in Ontario, people pay about 13 cents per kWh
for wind power while the average price for nuclear,
water and gas power is 7 cents. This is a major price
difference

How Much Energy is Produced?

As of June 2015, wind power generates a top capacity of
10,204 megawatts, providing about 4% of Canadas electricity
demand.
As of the end of 2014, worldwide, total installed capacity from wind
power totals at 369,553 Megawatts
The closest percentage provided by wind energy for the world is for
just Europe which states that wind energy capacity covers 10.25 of
Europes power consumption, powering 73 million households

Impact On Environment
Wind Energy is a Renewable Resource meaning
that it will not run out or deplete and will always
be a way to produce energy without harming the
environment.
By using the natural flow of air over Earth, the
never-ending energy produced is harnessed.
This allows humans to use less fossil fuels and
other non- renewable resources that will either
run out or damage our environment

Positives of Wind Energy

It's a clean fuel source that doesnt pollute the air like coal or natural gas
plants do. Wind turbines don't produce any pollution that can cause acid
greenhouse gasses.
It's sustainable, meaning it will not run out and is infinite.
Wind power is cost effective meaning it is relatively low cost for all the
energy it produces. According to sources, wind energy is one of the lowestpriced renewable energy available today.

Negatives of Wind Energy

Turbines can be very loud and annoying to people
who live nearby
The turbine blades can hurt wildlife. Sometimes
birds have been killed by flying into the rotors.
Good wind sites are a lot of the time in remote
locations, far from cities where the electricity
needs to be brought to. Transmission lines then
have to be built to bring the electricity from the
wind farm to the city.
