Personification
T questions Ss What is Personification? In small
groups, Ss discuss what they know about personification
what is it, examples etc.
T defines personification for Ss, and provides some
examples.
In small groups, Ss re-read pages 23-28. As they read, Ss
must look for examples of personification in these pages.
T facilitates discussion with Ss about the authors use of
personification in chapter 2 and the way that this adds to
the text. Eg. I felt the happiness would burst right out of
me!
Ss work in pairs to think of 4 personification phrases
that could be used to emphasise the village that Valli
lived in or the sights she saw. Ss record these in their
English Learning Journals.
Ss write one I am line about Valli that incorporates
personification.
Indian Culture
T will facilitate discussion with Ss about the caste system
in India Are there any parallels within Australian
culture?
T reads page 33 where Valli gives Mrs Murkejee a

In pairs, Ss research particular practices that Indian

culture adheres to. See resource 2 for list of topics. What
do each of these represent? Why are they a part of Indian
culture? What is their purpose?
Ss report back to the class about the Indian cultural
practise that they researched. These findings may also
be recorded on the Valli brainstorm.
Ss write one I am line about Valli that incorporates a
part of Indian Culture.
Similes
T reads page 55, and facilitates discussion with Ss about
the authors use of similes eg. ..as they kicked the
statue between them like a football.
IN small groups, Ss read Simile or Metaphor (see
resource 6) and decide whether each is a simile or
metaphor
Ss refer back to their brainstorm on Valli, and use these
thoughts as a starting point for developing their own
similes.
Ss think of three other similes that could be used to
emphasise the sights that Valli has seen and
experienced. Ss complete this as part of their English
Learning Journals.
Ss write one I am line about Valli that incorporates a
simile.
