Picture on Cover: Crdoba Synagogue is a historic edifice in the Jewish

Quarter of Crdoba, Spain built in 1315. After the expulsion of the Jews
from Spain in 1492, the building was devoted to various functions
including a Hydrophobic hospital, a chapel for shoemakers, and a
nursery school. It was declared a National Monument in 1885. Since
then it has undergone several phases of the restoration including that
of Felix Hernandez in 1929 and one started in 1977 for the reopening
of the building in 1985 to celebrate the 850th anniversary of birth of
Maimonides.

Iran. Believed by some to house the remains of the biblical Queen
Esther and her cousin Mordechai, it is the most important pilgrimage
site for Jews in the country. Iran is also the birthplace to some members

Letter from the Rabbi

From very early on we are taught the importance
of being open to new experiences. Whether its
being introduced to our first green vegetables or
taking on a musical instrument, new experiences
are the bedrock of intellectual, social and physical
development. Sadly, as we get older we become
more stagnant and tend to shy away from new
opportunities. The routine and everyday is perhaps
most dangerous when it comes to Avodat Hashem.
In Elul the refrain which reverberates on our lips is
Al Tashlicheinu leeit Ziknah, do not cast us off into
old age. The Maggid of Mezerich commented that
old age doesnt refer to years or wrinkles but rather
stubbornness and unwillingness to grow and expand
our horizons.
This year please consider each of our shuls
wonderful offerings not as an opportunity to find
your own niche and comfort zone, but rather as a
chance to expand your mind beyond that which you
are accustomed. So choose a new class, something
youve never before studied, participate in our social
programs and try and meet new people. Check
out the Sephardic minyan or hashkama minyan one
Shabbat, dare to throw in an extra melody into your

prayers, volunteer to get involved in our Neshei or to

tell a story one morning to our youth groups. If youve
never been into music dont be afraid to imbibe the soul
penetrating songs of Yosef Kardunor.
A few highlights to take note of: With an election
year ahead of us, KCT is proud to be offering a special
program on Religion and politics.
Additionally, this previous year has been quite difficult
for our kehila with the passing of our Sephardic
founder and teacher, Reb Chaim Kohanchi zl. We have
reprinted an article of his from his sefer Ner Chaim in
this brochure as a tribute to his indelible contributions
to our kehila. His impact continues to be felt each day
as the Sephardic minyan continues to grow and offer
more Torah opportunities than ever before. On that
note, we are pleased to welcome our Sephardic Rabbinic
Intern, Rabbi Mosheh Aziz. There will be a number of
opportunities throughout the year to interact and learn
with him.
Our diverse cadre of classes and programs are here to
help us grow, and connect to each other, to become
an , but that is only possible if we dare to look
beyond our own routine. Please join me and together let
us expand the walls of this glorious community which
we have, with the help of God, built.

Letter from Assistant Rabbi

Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik once referred to his shiur
as a symposium of generations. He described how
through teaching, he felt as though he was introducing
his students to the Rambam, Rashi, Rabbi Akiva Eiger,
and all of the other great Talmudic scholars throughout
our history. In the Ravs classroom generations that
lived centuries apart were able to debate, challenge and,
ultimately, inspire one another.

To see a member of our early morning Daf Yomi grapple
with a difficult Tosafot or someone become inspired by
a Shabbos drasha is to join the symposium. And to see
a parent and child bonding over Torah at Veshinantam is
to know that this gift that has been entrusted to us, will
surely be passed on to our children.
So join the Daf, or pick a shiur; set up a chavrutah or

bring your children to learn. I invite you all to come and

Rabbi Mosheh Aziz is a third-year Semikha student and Maybaum Fellow at the
Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary. He currently serves as an assistant rabbi
for the Mashadi Jewish Community in Great Neck, NY. Rabbi Aziz recieved YorehYoreh Semikha from Rabbi Eliyahu Ben-Haim in 2012. He holds a Masters Degree in
Social Work from Wurzweiler School of Social Work and and a Bachelors Degree in
Psychology from Yeshiva University, where he graduated summa cum laude.

raised on a cattle farm in Upstate
New York. Hes the son of German
Jewish Refugees. His educational
background is Yeshiva College,
an MBA from New York University
in Finance and rabbinical Semicha

served as the Rabbi of Young
Israel of Oak Park, Michigan for
six years where he more than
doubled that congregation and
was known as the bridge builder
to all segments of the Jewish and
greater community of South West
Michigan. He served for ten years
as the senior Rabbi of Beth Jacob
of Beverly Hill, California where he
expanded the membership base by
over 500 families and developed
Beth Jacob as the premier
Orthodox shul of the West Coast.

Rabbi Yitzchak Etshalom was
born and raised in Los Angeles,
California. He attended Yeshivat
Kerem BYavne, Rabbi Isaac
Elhanan Theological Seminary
and Yeshivat Har Etzion before
receiving Semicha from the Chief
Rabbi of Yerushalayim, Rabbi Itzhak

Kolitz. Rabbi Etshalom has been in
a dynamic and exciting educator
in the Los Angeles community
since his return in 1985. His ability
to reach out to todays youth and
share with them his passion for
Jewish learning and Jewish life has
enriched many young lives. His
talents, however, are not confined
to the classroom - he is an
accomplished storyteller, radio host
and songwriter and has produced
recordings of both his own stories
and music. Rabbi Etshalom, whose
popular and scholarly books
Between the Lines of the Bible
(Volume 1 published by Yashar
Books in 2006; with a revised and
expanded edition coming out in the
fall of 2015; Volume 2 published
in 2012 by Urim Press and the
OU Press) have garnered critical
acclaim, serves on the faculty of
Yeshiva University of Los Angeles
High Schools, where he is Chair of
the Bible Department and Director
of Judaic Curriculum. In addition, he
teaches Daf Yomi and a popular

American-born
Orthodox rabbi,
scholar, lecturer, and writer. He is
regarded as an expert on Jewish
history and has popularized the
subject through more than 1,000
audio tapes, a four-volume book
series, newspaper articles and
international lectures. Throughout
his career, he has retained personal
and ideological ties to both Modern
Orthodox and Haredi Judaism.
Wein is known for his witty
speaking and writing style: his
sayings and observations have
been collected together, by
James Weiss, into a 283-page
book entitled Vintage Wein: The

collected wit and wisdom, the

choicest anecdotes and vignettes
of Rabbi Berel Wein (Shaar Press,
1992). Since his move to Israel, he
has also penned three collections
of essays, titled Second Thoughts:

family and life (1999), and Living
Jewish: Values, Practices and
Traditions. He has also authored
commentaries on Ethics of Our

playwright, author, journalist,
essayist and the founding artistic
director of the Jewish Theater

ultimate leftist and humanist who
loves all people, is everything the
left pretends to be but is not,
while Channel 2 TV named it the
most important book in the last
five years, and Haaretz, Israels
most prestigious paper, advised
its readers to read Tenenboms
book; we dont have the luxury
not to know what hes telling us.
In Germany the book came out in
November 2014 by the publishing
house of Suhrkamp under the title

At the Yeshivat Hakotel Rav
Taragin is responsible for the
quality and message of the overall
program and the welfare of each
of its students. Despite his many
responsibilities, Rav Taragin
manages to develop a deep kesher
with each of the talmidim both
while they are in yeshiva and
afterwards (he maintains personal
contact with each one of the
yeshivas alumni).
He is well-known for his shiurim in
Gemara, Tanach and Machshava, his
inspiring talks, signature tisches,
and the personal advice he offers
to talmidim.
Rav Reuven Taragin, a Wexner
Fellow and Musmach of the Israeli
Chief Rabbinate completed a B.A. in
Science and Philosophy at Yeshiva
University and an M.A. in Jewish
History and Education at Touro
College (Israel). While in America
Rav Taragin ran shabbatonim for

where he researches the history
of Muslim-Jewish relations. He

2005-2008 was the departments
assistant director. He lectures for
international and American groups
about Judaism and other religions
and serves as a member of the
research council of the International
Conference of Christians and
Jews. Ari received his Master of
Theological Studies from Harvard

during which time he was also
a Wexner Foundation Graduate

Fellow. He completed his bachelors
degree in philosophy at Yeshiva
University in 2005.
Shuli Taubes is a native of Teaneck,
NJ, and received her Masters in
Divinity from Harvard Divinity
School and her BA in history from
Barnard College. She currently
serves as a faculty member at
SAR High School in Riverdale, New
York, where she teaches Tanakh,
Jewish Identity, and chairs the
Jewish Philosophy department. She
has also developed and teaches a
curriculum for educating modern
orthodox high school students in
comparative religion. Shuli recently
represented the American Jewish
Committee at inter-religious
conferences in Berlin and Jerusalem.
This year Shuli is serving as a
Community Scholar at the Young
Israel of North Riverdale where
she gives shiurim and serves in
a pastoral role. Shuli has lectured
in synagogues through-out the
country as well as at The Drisha
Institute and Yeshiva Universitys

in a number of critical positions in

Parashat vayeira
The outcry*
by Chaim Kohanchi
Avraham stepped forward and said, Will you, then,

wipe out the righteous along with the wicked?1
hen Avraham negotiated with Hashem

regarding the fate of Sedom and Amorah,
he took an interesting approach. Our pasuk
seems to say that he had no objection to
Hashem killing the wicked, and insisted only
that the righteous should be spared. But then
he immediately switches his approach:
Perhaps there are fifty righteous people

in the city. Will You still wipe it out, and
not pardon the place for the sake of
those fifty righteous men in its midst? 2
Avraham asked if there were fifty righteous
people that could save the whole city, not
only themselves but everyone, including the
wicked. How did he come to this new approach?
Further, when Hashem answered that there
were not fifty men, he bargained down until
ten. Why did he stop asking at this number?
Why not try for one man? And, deeper still, if
he had already asked Hashem to differentiate
between the righteous and the wicked, saving
the one and destroying the other, what difference did it make how many righteous people
there were?
The answer lies in the nature of Divine justice,
which is always
, the punishment
fitting the crime. When people kill each other
without justice, the
says that since
someone else is doing his job, and doing it
any way he wants, he too will do whatever he
wants. Mass destruction descends upon that
place, without separation between
.3
I will go down and see if they have done

according to the outcry that has come
to Me.4

Chazal tell us that this was the cry of Lots

daughter, who was killed by the people of Sedom for feeding the hungry and poor. 5 This
kind of behavior gave the
power
to kill indiscriminately.
Avraham knew this rule: when the
is granted permission to kill, he does not differentiate between good and bad people. 6
Therefore he had to ask Hashem to send two
malachim to Sedom, one to destroy and one
to save the good people.
This was the first stage of Avrahams negotiations: he asked that the righteous should not
be killed with the wicked, his goal being to
achieve distinction, whereby every man would
be accountable for his own deeds, rather than
mass killing of everybody.
After he achieved this concession from Hashem, it was now established that the sins of
Sedom were not necessarily public property.
A good man could still be recognized as good
and so be exempted from the destruction.
Now Avraham started to ask if maybe there
were enough righteous people to have an influence on the general public. Could their individual goodness become a new public norm in
time? If it could, he could now ask Hashem to
save the whole city in order to give its good
people a chance to reform it.
To understand Avrahams thinking better, let
us imagine that someone was told that his
leg must be amputated. After some thought,
he asked if every part of the leg was so bad
that this was necessary. The doctor agreed
to check further, and found out that one small
area of the upper leg was not as bad as the
rest. The patient now asked his next question:
was it possible that this area was recovering? And based on that, perhaps the whole
leg could recover? At first he could not have
asked this, but now that a part might be recovering, it was possible that the whole leg
would, too. Avraham followed this same logic
concerning Sedom and Amorah.

He stopped at the number ten because in the
time of Noach Hashem had separated nine
people (including Og) and saved them in the
Ark. This indicated that the nine people
were tzaddikim, yet they were not enough to
save everyone else. Avraham knew, then, that
less than ten would not be enough.
All the same, Hashem saved Lot and his family,
and He did this owing to the fact that Avraham prayed for Sedom. We can learn from
here that no prayers go to waste, even if it
seems that we didnt receive what we asked
for. Avraham asked to save the cities, and the
next day they were destroyed, but unknown
to him Lot and his family were saved.

Our Boys is the fourteenth documentary
produced by Moriah Films. The film examines
the events surrounding the kidnapping and
murder of Gil-Ad Shaer, Naftali Fraenkel,
and Eyal Yifrach, zl, by Hamas terrorists in
the summer of 2014. The parents of each
boy recall their short lives and how this
tragedy has impacted upon them. Arab
affairs analyst for Israeli TV Ehud Yaari
and author Yossi Klein Halevi discuss why
the kidnapping and murder of the boys
galvanized Israel and the Diaspora. The
film them examines how the indiscriminate
shelling of Israeli cities and towns from Gaza
by Hamas, which followed the murders,
resulted in the Gaza war. The film also looks
at how events during and following the Gaza
war have led to the greatest resurgence of
anti-Semitism in Europe since the defeat of
the Nazis in 1945.

Shabbat morning and youth minyan, you may wish your child to
have focused learning time with a mentor. Typically children will
spend a number of sessions with one of our rabbis or a teacher
to study a portion of Torah, a topic of interest, or partake in a
chessed project. Rabbi Gelman is available to work with you and
your child to develop a meaningful and inspirational curriculum
custom tailored to meet their interests and needs. Often children
will use the study time as an opportunity to prepare a dvar Torah
to be delivered at the simcha. Remember, the earlier lessons
begin, the less pressure there will be on your child as the date

Gimmel (Grades 2-5)
This group enjoys divrei Torah, davening lead by
a chazzan and chazzanit, parsha activities, games
and lots of fun!
9:45 AM -10:40 AM The Talmidim
(Grades 6 and up)
A chabura on the parsha with various role models
and Rabbeim in the community during kriyat
haTorah. The chaburah features learning about
the parsha and is followed by chullent, snacks and
games!
9:30 AM Youth Minyan (Monthly)
Let teens stretch their spiritual wings by leading
and participating in a special teens only Shabbat
tefilah in the Beit Midrash.

Jewish law and parsha. Enjoy a lunch with your friends and
colleagues while engaging in relevant discussions about
business ethics, kashrut and other common issues confronting

Shalom Klein is the Founder of Jewish B2B Networking, Vice President at
MK&A, Ltd. and Executive Director of the Jewish Community Council of West
Rogers Park. Shalom hosts a weekly radio show, Get Down To Business
with Shalom Klein on AM 560 in Chicago. He has served as Chairman of
the Village of Skokies Economic Development Commission and many small
business and employment task forces in Illinois and at the White House. Shalom earned his
M.A. from Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership and is currently completing
his doctorate in educational leadership.

Bruce Leon began his entrepreneurial adventure when he incorporated his
insurance agency, Benefits Solutions Group, in 1988. In 1997, Bruce created a
professional HR services solution, Tandem Professional Employer Services
