Objective:
- Cultivate understanding of two step equations
- Encourage student ability to solve two step equations with visuals algebra tiles

Aim for Instructor:

- Introduce solving equations with new context
o Two-step instead of single-step equations

Lesson

Introduce two steps equations of the form ax+b = c where a, b, and c are
whole numbers.

Ask students to come up with examples of equations of this form.

Use video to introduce topic, click here. The teacher can pause the Khan
Academy video when students want to discuss what they are viewing.
The video includes the use of algebra tiles so students will follow with
their own set of algebra tiles.

Ask students to work towards solving the two step equations from Khan
Academys practice questions (with or without the use of algebra tiles

depending on the student). Students will work on these problems
individually on the iPads.
Once students are comfortable with solving equations with algebra tiles,
suggest attempting to solve without using concrete manipulatives.

Meeting Needs of Diverse Learners:

Students Who Finish Early: Work on three step equations.
Students Who Appear To Be Struggling: Continuously use algebra tiles to
encourage concrete understanding.

Assessment:
Formative Assessment: Assess the work done while solving problems with and
without algebra titles and take note of how many students are feeling comfortable
without using manipulatives to solve every problem.

Conclusion:
Working with two-step equations to encourage a new deeper understanding of
equations presented from a new perspective (Khan Academy).
