School Reading Problems Lesson Reflection

Sami Goldin- Reflection (lessons 8&9) October 25, 2015

Objective

SWBAT read sentences and use

proper inflections according to
punctuation.
SWBAT add the correct
punctuation that is needed on the
worksheet.

SWBAT summarize each page and

grasp the main ideas of each
page.

Teaching Strategy
Fluency
I taught Syriana how to add
punctuation in sentences where it
is needed. We began the lesson
with having her read sentences
from the board with inflection
according to the punctuation. I
have her do this so she can
practice reading punctuation
correctly. I then wrote sentences
on the board and gave her
examples of how I would add
punctuation into the sentences. I
then instructed her to complete
the worksheet and add the correct
punctuation.
Comprehension
Throughout Monday and
Wednesday, Syriana complete The
Big Balloon Race book. We began
each lesson discussing the main
ideas that happened in the
chapters previous to the ones she
was about to read. I then
instructed her to read the chapter
and then complete the sheet of
questions that correspond with
the chapter. After, we discussed
the questions and the correct
answers. Since we completed the
book, I asked Syriana questions

Outcomes

(Descriptive evidence objective was

met)

I think this lesson was effective. It

is clear to me that she has not
been very exposed/had practice
with punctuation, however for the
most part she was able to add in
the corrections on her own. Since
we have been spending a lot of
time on punctuation, it is
comforting to see that she is
improving and learning what I am
teaching her.

I think Syriana is really improving

with her comprehension. She got
most of the questions correct and
the ones she didn't, she didn't
look carefully enough for details. I
spoke with her about how
important it is to take your time
and look for the details and
correct answers. She did really
well with completing the problemsolution chart. It was clear to me
that she comprehended the book
and the different themes I taught
her.

SWBAT write her own mini story with a

clear plot, setting, and character (s).
SWBAT use punctuation and use it
correctly.

SWBAT identify and spell words correctly

with inflected endings.

about how she liked the book,

what/how would she feel if she
was in the characters different
decisions. Also, we made a
problem-solution chart with the
different problems throughout the
book and the solution to those
problems.
Writing
Since Syriana really struggles with
punctuation, I asked her to write
me a story using different forms
of punctuation. Although correct
punctuation is key in this
assignment, I wanted to see if she
could create a story in her head
and actually get it down on paper.
We had a discussion about how
important it is to use punctuation
in writing as well as using it
correctly.

Word Study
Since she really enjoyed the
punctuation game on the
computer, I found another game
that focuses on doubling the last
letter and changing yie. On
Monday, we worked on yie, and
on Wednesday we worked on
doubling the last letter. I began
the lesson by putting words on
the board and having us talk
through how to change the
endings together. Then, I sat with
Syriana as she played the game

Syriana was able to create her

own story using punctuation and
having an actual story line. It did
take her some time to think of an
idea and write a story about it. I
noticed that when she tries to use
punctuation, sometimes she will
just put in a question mark
because she wants it to be a
question even though it isnt a
question. I worked with her and
we talked about how to make the
sentence she wanted into a
question and that you should only
use the correct punctuation.
This lesson was a little more
difficult than I anticipated. Since
there are so many words and
different words have different
rules, it was hard to me to explain
why one word had a double
consonant and one word didn't.
When she was playing the game,
however, she for the most part
did pretty well.

and helped her when she asked

for it.
