Classify organisms can be classified on the basis of observable characteristics. Students will sort/classify
different living things
using similar and different characteristics.
Describe why organisms belong to each group or cite evidence about how they are alike or not alike
LEARNING OBJECTIVE(S):
Students should be able to:

Understand how to develop and use a dichotomous key to classify plants and animals.
Understand that animals can be classified based on characteristics.
Do an experiment to observe and classify shells by similarities and differences.
TEXTS/ MATERIALS/ RESOURCES:
Copybooks, Science Textbook, Big question video, concept talk video, smart board, vocabulary words and
worksheets.
WARMING UP/ LEAD IN / Preview / Review
Let students predict what might this be and why might it look the way it does? Go into the Big Question.

TEACHER INSTRUCTION AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES:


Sunday: Students will bring in their 5 day bread experiment which they
tested on to comparing methods. Students will explain if their predictions
were correct. What did they observe these 5 days and did any of them
guess right or wrong?
Monday: Introduce a new Chapter 3: Classifying Organisms. Write down
these keywords: (observe, classify, infer..) and know there meanings for
this lesson. Start with the question How do we classify living things?
Reasons to classify. (H.W. questions)
Tuesday: Read and understand the visuals of the diagram of the
classification system. What is the general, and therefore the largest,
classification group called? To which domain do human beings belong?
Why?

Wednesday: Students will do an experiment at home and bring into the

class. How can shells be classified? What is a Dichotomous key? How does
a dichotomous key work?
Thursday: Vocabulary/ Spelling Test of the given words of this new
lesson.
EVIDENCE OF LEARNING (ASSESSMENT): Experiment observations, Spelling and Vocabulary Test.
HOMEWORK: The Shell experiment. Vocabulary words to define in their copybooks. Finish answering the given
questions on Pg. 88 for their experiment. Finish the questions throughout the lesson in their textbooks.
