Movement

Movement is part of the five themes of geography. Movement is the

way people, products, information and ideas get around. There are
two types of movement: local and global movement. Local
movement is how people, products, and ideas move within the
country whereas global movement is movement between countries.
I used examples from my GJS walk-about. Products move from place
to place as a result of movement. An example of local movement is
the Global Jaya batik uniform. Batik is a Javanese design technique
for cloth. The batik uniform was manufactured in Java. This is a local
movement because everything happens within the country. An
example of a global movement is our mobile phones. Samsung
phones are designed in Korea but manufactured in China. iPhones
are designed in California but also manufactured in China. People
also conduct local and global movement. Most students in GJS come
from different regional parts of Indonesia, which is local movement.
For example, my friend Baariq is primarily of Aceh extract as that is
where his parents originate from and he has lived in Indonesia all his
life. Some students also come from abroad. For example, I was born
in Singapore and lived there for 3 years before moving and living in
the UK for 5 and half years. As a result I have lived in 3 countries
including Indonesia. Ideas and information travel using local and
global movement just like products and people. There are so many
ideas that come from both within Indonesia and other parts of the
world. A local example of idea is the concept and design of batik
from Java. A global example of idea is religion. For example, Islam
was founded in Mecca, Saudi Arabia and it quickly spread to the rest
of the world over a few centuries. Today Islam is the second most
popular religion in the world with 1.5 billion followers. An example of
local information is Global Jaya News. The Global Jaya News
committee covers major school events and interviews teachers and
broadcasts the footage on the canteen TV. An example of global
movement of information is social media. Social media such as
Snapchat, Skype, BBM, Line allows you to share information with
friends or family across the globe. Movement is a theme that can be
easily understood because there are so many examples to see
around us. People, products, information and ideas constantly travel
every second.

Food was imported from other countries but was

transported throughout Indonesia to get to GJS.
This is a combination of local and global
movement.

Our teacher, Pak Bravo is from the US. He used

global movement to get to Indonesia.

Understanding of the
world
Movement doesnt
just include other
people and products
but they also include
ideas that are used
globally. An example
of a globally used
idea that was
created/founded in
one place and quickly
spread to other
places are religions.
An example of a
religion is Islam. Islam
