Town Team Review for Sandwich Town Council: September 2015
1) The Town Team were extremely unhappy at the Joint Transportation Board's rejection of the
High Street tables at a fractious meeting, A strong letter will be sent to M Balfour, KCC Cabinet
Member, complaining at the way the decision was reached and requesting an alternative
engineering solution to High Street's traffic problem as a matter of urgency. (Copies to P Carter
and P Watkins of KCC and DDC respectively.)
Meanwhile, work is in handto ensure JTB members are better informed about the Green Paper
context as well as being more appreciative of local consultation processes.
2) The Sandwich Working Group - comprising representatives of KCC, DDC, STC, Stagecoach and
the Town Team - held its first meeting on 23/9 to review options and concert action on a number
of fronts. Although the Green Paper items are at different stages, the overall feeling is that
stakeholders are positively engaged and we are moving forward.
3) A summary is about to be sent to the business contact group, listing the Green Paper
recommendations side by side with their counter-proposals. At the time of writing results are
awaited from the traders' own survey on delivery lorry sizes.
4) While a decision has yet to be made on membership of the Coastal Community Team, we shall
‘send a delegate to their next meeting in October. We understand Sandwich Town Council are
doing the same.
5) To ensure a coordinated approach, Clr Miller has been requested to discuss the parking survey
findings with the Town Team in advance of their release to DDC.
6) Craig Mackinlay MP has written to P Carter, KCC Leader, reminding him of an earlier assurance
about the Highways Depot on Ash Road. It was understood that part of the site would be reserved
for bus and coach parking,
7) Following recent transgressions, the Mayor kindly undertook to contact the Co-Op and Spar
managers regarding the size and routing of their vehicles.
8) The public Drop-in is in the process of being publicised via a mass leaflet drop, Sandwich
Times, Mercury, Hello Sandwich, Town Council website and strategically placed notices.
