MATH 4/51001

Homework #7
Due: Wednesday, November 4
Reading:
For Fri., October 30:
For Wed., November 4:

3.5
3.6

Problems to turn in:

3.3: 2, 4, 5, 8.
3.4: 2, 8, 15, 16.
Notes:
Caution: In 3.3 #8, you are asked to show that if H1 6 G1 and H2 6 G2 , then
H1 H2 is a subgroup of G1 G2 . It is not true that every subgroup of G1 G2 is a
direct product of a subgroup of G1 and a subgroup of G2 . Can you find an example of
a group with a subgroup not of this form?
On 3.4 #2, construct the group tables and find a relabelling so that the tables become
the same. You need not find an isomorphism (map) explicitly.
Also, observe that Z
7 is cyclic, with generator [3]. It will be easier to find a relabelling
if you list the elements of Z
7 in the order of powers of [3] instead of numerical order.
Hint for 3.4 #16(b): Use 3.1 #22 from Homework #5.

Problems to be aware of:

3.3: 6, 7, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17.
3.4: 3, 4, 5, 6, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20.
[Problems in bold contain results we will assume and use in the course.]
