Arnica montana

Overview – Arnica montana is the crowning flower of athletes for more than a half
millennia. Over the centuries it has been called a variety of names such as Leopard’s
bane, wolf’s bane, and mountain snuff, but today the common short form is “Arnica.” In
the past it was used internally for sore throats, muscle pain, and even gun shot wounds,
though now modern medicine has shown that it has analgesic, counterirritative,
bactericidal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Nevertheless, it has also been found to
contain a toxin, helenalin, and so we do not recommend Arnica montana for open wounds
or internal use.

What Arnica Can Treat – Arnica Montana is skin’s best friend; a following is a list of
the ailments that it can treat: Osteoarthritis, Inflammation, Bruises, Sprains, Strains,
Rheumatic Pain, Insect Bites, Swelling, Soft Tissue Trauma, Poor Blood Circulation,
Acne, Muscle Aches, Dandruff, Boils, High Cholesterol, and Chilblains.

Treatment – This remedy is for topical use only and is available primarily in ointments
and gels. Use one with a maximum of 15% arnica oil—most will have less than 10%. An
alcohol or witch hazel base are both good.

Massage gently into the skin. Apply 3-5 times a day on the affected area, as needed.

How It Works – Arnica montana root contains thymol, which functions as an anti-
inflammatory and a vasodilator which stimulates the body’s healing mechanisms. When
applied to the skin, arnica promotes the production of white blood cells and clear out
fluids congregated in bruised or injured areas.

Taken internally it will greatly lower blood pressure and this can cause health risks. Do
not ingest Arnica montana.

Toxicity – Arnica montana should not be ingested. Only apply diluted forms of Arnica
montana since it does contain a toxin, helenalin. Those with skin conditions such as
eczema, should not take Arnica for a more than 7 continuous days. Do not apply to open
wounds.

Pregnant or nursing women should avoid Arnica.
