The following is an assignment regarding a collection of

gathered resource websites. It contains a website from a
variety of topics within Special Education, as well as the
usefulness of each site identified.

Description of Website: This site goes into details about the past and present IDEA
provisions. It gives a brief history of IDEA, and goes into detail about the science behind the
provisions. This gives a good idea as to why IDEA is necessary. It also goes into detail about
what a learning disability is and what qualifies a student as having a LD, or learning disability.
This is important because IDEA was created to protect those students with learning disabilities.
This article shares the identification and evaluation process for students with potential learning
disabilities.

Potential value for educators: This website can be valuable to inform educators of what
qualifies a student as having a learning disability. Without knowledge of the guidelines,
educators may over identify students for special education evaluation. Even worse, they may
miss students that are in need of help and not have them properly evaluated. This is a part of the
Child Find provision in IDEA 2004, which information is presented in this article.

Credibility of website: This website seems to be very credible. They are an organization
funded by the National Center for Learning Disabilities. The article in which the link is tied to is
written by Dr. Jack M. Fletcher, a professor of psychology at The University of Houston. He
shares all the sources of his article, and there is a lot of helpful information presented.

Description of Website: This page provides a lot of useful information regarding inclusion,
as well as the least restrictive environment. The information describes the terminology of
inclusion and least restrictive environment as well as some useful information in teaching
children in those settings. There is also a useful chart outlining the differences and similarities in
inclusion and the Least Restrictive Environment.

Potential value for educators: This is of value to teachers for two reasons. First, it is useful
to know the difference between the law-mandated Least Restrictive Environment and the concept
of inclusion. This site has a very nice chart showing the similarities and differences between the
two. Second, this is valuable for the information in how to teach special education students that
are in the general education classroom. A very relevant point that was made on this site, is to
always remember that all inclusion students have different needs and will need to be taught
differently.

Credibility of website: This website is provided by an accredited four year university, Texas
Womans University. It was written by students in the doctorate and masters program, but was
presented on behalf of the University. I feel as though it should be fairly reliable. It was last
updated in January 2015, so the information should be relevant as well.

Description of Website: This website seems to be an information link for teachers within the
Johns Hopkins University. Although they are at the collegiate level, there are some useful
reminders of the structure that is needed when teaching students with learning disabilities. It
outlines the steps to go through to make sure you properly accommodate students with learning
disabilities. Although in the public school, EC-12 education, the state mandates these guidelines.
But it is still useful to have the reminders to be conscientious of those students.

Potential value for educators: This site may not be as valuable as the others presented on
this list. It is more common sense, as well as things that are already state mandated. However, it
does provide useful information about how students with learning disabilities function and how
having clean and concise expectations and explanations are necessary for these students.

Credibility of website: This site is very credible, as it is presented from Johns Hopkins
University. It is the guidelines they provide to their professors, so the information is at a very
professional level of credibility.

Teaching students with developmental disabilities/mental retardation:

Description of Website: This website shares some strategies to use while teaching students
with an intellectual disability (ID), which is also called mental retardation. A lot of these
strategies are similar to methods used with other learning disabilities. However, it is nice to have
the information specifically aimed towards individuals with an intellectual disability.

Potential value for educators: This site is of value to educators because it share the
information about how to best educate students with an intellectual disability. This is useful
because every type of learning disability is unique and students within each category should have
their own unique set of accommodations.

Credibility of website: This site appears to be credible. It is co-written by 3 individuals, 2

doctors and a lady with a bachelors. It is well written, and seemingly knowledgeable. It is posted
to a site that is directly aimed at mental help and behavioral health, and seems to be a credible
site for such topics.

Description of Website: This site is presented by an education service agency, and provides
some very useful files. There are 5 main PDFs on the home page: basic strategies to facilitate
success, positive behavioral supports, end of class check list visual, schedule with built in
rewards, and a homework contract. The basic strategies and positive behavioral supports pages
have some very useful information that is important for educators. Also, on the site map, you can
find links to important updates and mandates made that affect the students in special education,
especially learners with an autism disorder.

Potential value for educators: This site has so much useful information and is a very
valuable tool for educators. Not only does it have reward charts and positive enforcement
guidelines, but it also has a lot of very important information in regards to mandates that effect
teachers, and useful tools to work with students on the autism spectrum.

Credibility of website: This site seems to be very knowledgeable and credible. It is provided
by an education service agency. It provides sources for all legal material and presents itself very
business-like.

emotionally disturbed students. It defines an emotional disturbance, and describes how to
identify an emotionally disturbed student. Lastly, it gives some strategies for working with
students that may be emotionally disturbed. There is a lot of information presented on this page,
and it is a very valuable tool.

Potential value for educators: This information is extremely valuable to educators. It shares
information regarding the definition, identification process, as well as steps to take when
working with students that have an emotional disturbance. This can be very useful to educators
that are having to work with students with those needs.

Credibility of website: This site is extremely credible, as it comes from a highly regarded
reference site, Gallaudet. The page shares all reference materials, as well as the resources for the
information presented.

Description of Website: This site is a compilation of many useful resources in one. It has a
brief description of visual impairments, as well as a link to the main site for educating students
with visual disabilities. Next, it shares an article written by the National Organization of Parents
of Blind Children. Finally, there are many links to other useful information such as protocols for
computer based testing for the visually impaired, as well as many other very useful links.

Potential value for educators: There are a lot of valuable pages linked to this site, including
a link to an article by National Organization of Parents of Blind Children. There are also links to
many organizations that share useful information. If a teacher had a student with a visual
impairment, I would highly suggest them checking out this site and all the valuable links it holds.

Credibility of website: This site seems to be fairly credible. The information is presented in a
knowledgeable way, and the site is founded by a company call Perkins eLearning. The site their
sources, and inform you of who provides the information behind each link.

Description of Website: This site has useful information on adaptations and considerations
when working with students with auditory impairments. This is important, because a lot of times
people can misjudge how to go about an auditory impairment. This site also shares strategies for
curriculum adaptations that may be necessary for students with auditory impairments.

Potential value for educators: This site may not be as valuable to educators, because the
information presented is limited, there is not a lot of it. However, the information that is shared is
useful information. Sometimes educators misjudge how to work with children with auditory
impairments, and this site gives some very valuable information for effective students with these
impairments.

Credibility of website: This site is of questionable credibility. It is provided by an

organization called Bright Hub Education based out of New York, but upon searching their site I
was unable to find more information regarding who writes the articles, and how credible the
information is. For that reason, I would only suggest this site to someone who is familiar with the
laws and can more accurately depict the credibility of this site.

Teaching students with ADHD:

Description of Website: This website, presented by the Learning Center Institute, discusses
stduets with ADHD, among other learning disabilities. It has lists of useful techniques to better
focus learners with trouble focusing. It also has a chart listing 33 real life behaviors or possible
situations that an ADHD learner would encounter, as well as multiple strategies that a teacher can
use for resolving such incidents.

Potential value for educators: This site is very valuable for educators, there is a lot of useful
information presented. The listing of ways to refocus students with ADHD is of vast importance
in the classroom, and I feel as though other educators, especially newer teachers, would find it
very helpful. The real life scenarios, with accompanying resolution suggestions, could be
extremely useful for new teachers as well.

Credibility of website: This site is created by the Learning Center Institute, Inc. and has some
very educational information. The information presented is very credible and a very useful
source.

Description of Website: This site is issued by the University Of Kansas, and answer a lot of
questions regarding collaboration and co-teaching. It follows the who, what when, where, why
format, giving some insight into what co-teaching is, why it is so important, and some useful
tricks to successfully collaborate with co-teachers.

Potential value for educators: This site is extremely valuable for teachers because it
discusses the importance of collaborationsomething that all teachers must do in some way
through out their career. It not only discusses the importance, but it also shares why it is
necessary as well as ideas to collaborate in a more successful way.

Credibility of website: This site, being from a University, has some very credible and useful
information. It was written at a collegiate level, and for use by professors as well as students
being trained for the education field, and the information is very relevant and credible.
