Evaluation

My 5 minute drama revolves around a mute character Hugh who falls in love
with an average every day girl Aimee . Hugh proposes to her and gets rejected
. they become friends and Aimee falls in love with him . she writes a letter and
puts it inside a book that he gets to express her feelings and it ends on a cliff
hanger , letting audiences decide what happens next .
To be honest this wasnt my original idea for my short film as I was more
intriguing in attempting to make a crime thriller as I find the genre more
appealing and entertaining in contrast to the genre I decided to go for , romance
because of the lack of time we had to film the project . I incorporated
stereotypical devices in my short film to outline its romantic genre e.g. love
letters even though no one writes love letters because everyone is texting ,
there was a time when people use to write love letters which is more romantic
and heartfelt , in my opinion anyways . the background score isnt the
stereotypical background score you find in romantic movies but its quiet similar
however its more up beat which makes it more distinct .
To add extra dramatic effect , I implied a non linear realist narrative structure by
adding a flash back after the opening sequence explaining the story from the
beginning and having a believable storyline and implementing human emotions
to ground the characters and make them more relatable to the aimed audience
teenaged girls , middle aged women and couples who are looking for a good
romantic movie to go watch together on a date . the non linear structure of the
movie grabs the attention of the audiences from the beginning assisting them
to invest themselves in the movie emotionally . the realist narrative makes the
narrative more believable and builds false hope unintentionally in the audiences
mind making them believe that every love story has a happy ending and sugar
coat every harsh reality of life .
Furthermore , I left an open ending to let the audiences decide what happens
next as I didnt want it to give it a generic happy ending or as sequels are a
popular trend right now , leave space for a sequel for a future project .
To build my scenes , I used this structure : hook , development and climax e.g.
the opening sequence , I used the book as a hook and I developed on it as the
characters (Hugh) attention goes on to the book and the climax was the
character of Hugh opening the book .To build a story , I used the same structure
, for similar reasons , if nor the same .
I used parallel editing to portray the lives of both of the protagonists , hugh and
aimee this effects in adding emotions and a sense of time .
also , i tried to incorporate an establishing shot and the same shot from different
perspectives and angles e.g. over the shoulder , mid shot , long shot low/high
shot . i tried keeping the lighting of the film bright to represent the positive
emotions of the characters as well as to make the colour of the costume stand
out more to reinforce more emotions that the characters might be feeling , for
example ; the colour red representing love and passion or the colour black
representing sadness . however , if i was doing a horror or crime , id keep the
lighting dark to create an ambiguous or scary atmosphere as it would be most
appropriate for such type of content but because I'm doing a romance , i kept it

light hearted and tried to incorporate a bit of humour with the flashback but it
could've been done better .
