On October 20th, Fillmore High
conducted its evacuation drill.
Students and staff evacuated out
to the baseball field in an orderly
manner. Search and Rescue went
out to the classrooms and checked
all the classrooms and commons
areas.
The whole drill was
completed in twenty minutes. The
impressive thing from staff was the
behavior of the students during the
25 minutes on the field.
They
maintained proper behavior and
acted in the best manner.

Mr. MacMahon did find an older

student during the drill.

On Wednesday, the faculty and

staff played a friendly volleyball
match after school.
The staff
handily defeated the varsity, while
the jv downed the remaining staff.
Some of the staff members that
participated were Greg Simpson,
Leanna Legere, Luis Herrera, Josh
Overton, Anthony Chavez, Kellsie
McLain, Steven Kandel, Michael
Jennings, Tanya Gonzalez, Alyssa
Bennett, and Anna Morielli among
others.

Classroom Corner
Every Day is a Gift by Anna Morielli

Our resident expert,

Matt Dollar, gave
our
AP
English
students a lesson
on
the
most
profound question
that still resonates
in the 21st century.
To be or not to be:
that is the question?
To be . . . to live, we take the
opportunities that come our way.
Using Shakespeares Hamlet, Dollar
exposes students to several themes of
the Renaissance: Love, Death, Time,
and Man of Words and Thought versus
Man of Action. Immersed in literary
response
and
analysis
students
examine Shakespeares intriguing plot,

Hamlet discovers his father was

murdered by his uncle Claudius.
Reported by his guardsmen, Hamlet
learns of his fathers spirit, expressed
through the ghost of King Hamlet.
The ghost in purgatory orders
Hamlet to seek revenge on Claudius.
Here, we examine Hamlets inner
emotional turmoil to exact revenge
for the killing of his father versus
Hamlets indifference at the time of his
fathers death. With a focus on tone
and mood, students explore Hamlets
melancholy, torn between thought and
action.
Intrigued, students focus on the main
characters Polonius and Claudius;
their clever actions and political
grandstanding.
But what does it
mean to exact revenge for his
fathers death. What is the test that
Hamlet sets up? Students analyze
text for meaning: Hamlet accuses
Polonius
doing
what
with
his
daughter?
Shockingly or perhaps
not, students recognize that Polonius
is advertising his daughter; pimping
out his daughter.
Throughout the
lesson, students find images/evidence
that speak to thoughts versus actions.
The focus turns on Hamlets speech,
To be or not to be. More than half
the class thinks suicide.
Dollar
probes, Where did you come up with
this idea? He encourages students to
question its meaning:
Any idea?
What about it? Dollar reads through

Fillmore Friday

the poem, breaks it down for students
to
analyze
for
meaning
and
significance keeping in mind the
mood, tone, symbolism and irony.
Should I do it or not do it --thought
versus action. Should I be the king or
should I not be the king . . . Hamlet
surrenders: maybe easier to die in his
sleep, dont have to worry about
responsibilities. But Hamlet is afraid
of death. It is the fear of death that
makes us live.
Dollar hits it on the nail: Bad things
happen to good people. Even with all
the bad things in life, we continue to
love life. The more we think about
something, the less likely we take
action.
Every
decision we
make creates
our
future
making every
day a gift.

For the first time ever Elkins Golf
Course hosted 13 TCAA teams in the
second of 3 league meets. Running on
this beautiful course proved to be a
formidable
challenge
for
all
competitors as they had to navigate
two major climbs. One of the climbs
came early in the first mile and the
final climb came in the last mile of this
course. All 4 races will determine
league championship teams and which
boys and girls varsity teams will
represent TCAA at the Southern
Section CIF prelim meet on November
