Dear Parents,
As-Salaamu Alaikum!
In the last few weeks, weve wrapped up many of the units that we
were studying this term such as solving math problems using number
patterns, how animals adapt to their habitats, as well as getting along
as an introduction of Social studies. We have now started several new
units in Math, Science, and Social Studies. In L.A., we are continuing to
examine proper sentence structure and are working on developing
more details in our writing.

Science (Ch. 9)
Topic: How Animals get food from their habitat, Food Chains
Ways to support learning: Go to the library and get books on Food
chains/Food webs, discuss where the food we eat comes from.

Math: Place Value (Ch. 2)
Ways to support learning: Review place values such as ones, tens,
hundreds, thousands, & ten thousands. Practice spelling numbers.
Ensure your child can write numbers in standard form, expanded
form, and written form.

Social Studies: Mapping (Ch. 2)
Ways to support learning: Look at Maps and atlases. Examine features
such as scale, legends, colours, symbols and compasses that are
present on the map.

LA: Novel Study; Writing proper sentences.
Ways to support learning: Have your child keep a journal at home that
they can write their stories in. Once or twice a week, read the journal
entries and offer some advice on adding details in their stories as well
as correcting grammar. Have your child write a good copy of their
journal article to show that theyve understood the corrections that

they need to make. The novel that we are studying this term is called
Frindle. Ask your child to summarize the story of Frindle for you. Also,
work with your child to ensure that they can locate a variety of words
and definitions using a dictionary.

P.E.: Soccer/Cooperative/Team Games
We are currently wrapping up our unit of Soccer. We will be starting
our next unit of cooperative/team games soon.
Ways to support learning: Practice playing one on one soccer with
your child at home. Maintain a healthy amount of exercise at home as
well as emphasize proper nutrition and healthy eating.

ART: Lines/Dots
We have examined various techniques and artwork using lines. We
have also done a mini unit on creating optical illusions in art. I look
forward to examining more fun activities using lines as well as
starting our next unit on dots. For our unit on dots, we will be
examining the concept of pointillism, by George Seurat.
