Replacing Glow Plugs 147 1.

9 JTDm (Facelift)
Time Required
20 to 30 mins (max)
Tools/Parts required

4 x Bosch (or other) glow plugs - part number 0 250 203 001
1 x 10mm (deep) socket
1 x 9mm (deep) socket
Pliers or grips
Copper Grease (Spray type is convenient)
WD40 or other lubricant

Instructions
1. Remove the plastic Alfa engine cover,
(10mm socket required)
2. Locate glow plugs
They can be found on the north side of engine block centre just below the injection system, (please see
image 1 below). They are covered with voltage leads/caps similar to a standard spark plug cap but much
thinner.
(This image shows location of Glow plugs with caps in place & removed)

3. Removing the glow plugs voltage caps

See image 2 below showing the Glow plug voltage leads/caps caps in place. Remove the voltage caps
using pliers/grips, this can be tricky due to slightly restricted access & dont use too much force as the
plastic cap is quite brittle. Try to mainly use your hand with some gentle upwards pressure with the
pliers/grips at the base of the cap where it meets the plug itself.
(This image shows a close up view of Glow plugs with caps in place)

4. Removing the glow plugs

Spray the glow plug with a small amount of WD40 below the nut where the plug enters the engine block.
Using the 9mm socket gently unscrew the first plug (be careful if the plug is difficult to unscrew as it
might be seized and will snap if over force is used, costly garage bill)
(See image below showing glow plug with voltage cap removed)

5 Fitting new glow plugs

Take your new glow plug, spray copper grease on the plug thread to prevent future seizure & then screw
back in until tight but not over tight. Repeat this process for the remaining 3 plugs & refit voltage caps.
6. Condition of old Glow plugs
Faulty glow plugs will have black sooty deposits on the glowing tip, good working glow plugs will be a
dark primer like grey colour, see image below showing 2 faulty from my 147.
(Quite hard to tell the difference in this photo, as it was taken from my phone.)

Cheers & Good luck
