2. Can you tell the number of digits that will be in the quotient for 427 7 just by looking at the
problem? Explain your thinking.
Place Value/Estimation
SORT OF:
Philip, Konu, Yoonseo, Anjani, Eric, Christie, Alice
(42/7 is 6 and 7/7=1 so 2 digits)
NO:
Brandon , *Roki, *Seungji
4.NBT.6

Explore division through different strategies

3. Harry Potter, Greg Heffley, Doris and Percy Jackson are visiting Seoul and go to the Trick Eye
Museum. They spent a total of $160 on souvenirs. They each spent equal amounts on the
souvenirs. Harry and Doris did the math.
Harry used what he knows of place value and the distributive property and solved this way:
(100 4) + (60 4)= 40
Doris used multiplication and wanted to solve using that strategy. She did:
4 x 25 = 100, 4 x 10 = 40, 4 x 5 = 20
100 + 40 + 20 = 160
so, 160 4 = 40
Which person solved the problem correctly? Explain your thinking.
YES:
Philip, Yoonseo, Anjani
Seungjii (but weak explanation)
OK - (only said one person correct)
Konu, Eric, Alice, Brandon, Roki
NO:
*Christie

4.OA.3 Interpreting remainders

4. There are 394 students going on a field trip to Job World. They are put into groups of 8 for
each parent to watch. How many groups were created?
Show all of your work:
YES:
Konu - did algorithm, then interpreted remainder
NO:
Only did algorithm and wrote numeric answer:
Philip, Anjani, Eric, Yoonseo, Brandon, Christie, Alice
Way Off:
*Roki
*Seungji

How many did each group get? _________________________________________________

YES - sort of
Philip, Konu - both just did algorithm and then filled in
Christie, Anjani - just filled in, no showing of work
NO
Yoonseo, Eric, Alice
*Roki, Seungji
6. The second grade students are working on drawings in art class. They are trying to decide
how to display their drawings in the hallway. Mr. Cabalunas class made 45 drawings. Can the
students put the same number of drawings in each row if they use 2 rows? Explain your
thinking.
YES
Philip (good explan)
Yoonseo, Anjani, Eric, Konu, Alice
Sort of:
Christie - just did algorithm, didnt answer question
NO:
*Roki (multiplied)
*Seungji (no explanation)
Overall Observations:
Everyone except Roki and Seungji used the algorithm many times and did it correctly
Roki and Seungji need extra support on all concepts
Eric - needs help reading the question carefully to then answer appropriately
Algorithm is the only strategy they know to solve problems

All need practice interpreting remainders (only Konu got answer correct)
