This month I would like to take a look at a peculiar statement that I have heard in the
past and recently heard again. Why should I go to Church/Worship I dont get
anything out of it any way?
What I would like to do is look at the two words from the Old Testament and
the New Testament that we translate as worship. The Old Testament word hj;V; means to bow down, to pay
adoration, which of course makes sense when it is used in the context of God because He is the one and only
God who has given us all thing, life, salvation, everlasting life, etc. It is the Lord Himself that says to Moses
and the children of Israel in Exodus 20:3- 6
3
You shall have no other gods before me. 4You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or
any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the
water under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God
am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth
generation of those who hate me, 6but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me
and keep my commandments.
He also says in Exodus 34:12-14 12Take care, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land
to which you go, lest it become a snare in your midst. 13You shall tear down their altars and break their pillars
and cut down their Asherim 14(for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a
jealous God)
Now in the New Testament the word proskunevw, means the same thing as its Hebrew counterpart, do
reverence to.
A few references of this are found in John 4:20-22
20
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people
ought to worship. 21Jesus said to her, Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on
this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22You worship what you do not
know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
1 Corinthians 14:24-25 24But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted
by all, he is called to account by all, 25the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his
face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.
These are but a few examples from both Testaments of the usage of these words but what about an
explanation of why it is so important to worship, and therefore this statement is an incorrect way for a believer
to look at worship.
For that we go to the book of Acts for starters. Specifically Acts 2:42-47
42
And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of
bread and the prayers. 43And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being
done through the apostles. 44And all who believed were together and had all things in common.
45
And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as
any had need. 46And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes,
they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47praising God and having favor with all
the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Then we can move to the book of Hebrews 10:19-25
19
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,
by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,
21
and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us draw near with a true heart in
full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies
washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he
who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good
works, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another,
and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
20
Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God
acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29for our God is a consuming fire.
Worship is what we do because of what God has done for us. The what does this mean in the
explanation to the First Article of the Apostles Creed says
All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me.
For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is worship, thanking God, receiving
His gifts of His Sons body and blood, sharing in your faith with your neighbor. So what do we get out of
worship? We get to hear Gods word and His forgiveness in our ears and taste that forgiveness in Christs body
and blood in, with, and under the bread and the wine in our mouths. Thanks be to God that He has called us to
be His own. This is why we worship!
