Professional Growth Plan

1st Year Goals:
As a first year teacher I have multiple goals in place for the success of my classroom. First and
foremost I will need to familiarize myself with the school rules and district policy. I will then
need to introduce myself to the administration, faculty, and staff that I will be working alongside
with all year. I will need to develop a good working relationship with my fellow grade level
teachers, specials teachers, and any other staff can assist me during this time of learning. The
next most important goal is to create an efficient and effective classroom. During this first year I
will gain an understanding on how to handle classroom management and class routines. I know
that students need to have a structured and safe environment in which to learn. Therefore, they
need to understand the rules and expectations from the first day of school. In my first year, my
students and I will have to continuously work on clear and concise directions, so that we may
build a relationship of understanding and respect with each other. Also, I will need to increase
my confidence in effectively communicating with the parents of my students.
Long-Term Goals:
My long-term goals for teaching include continuing to foster the relationships between myself
and the staff, faculty and administration at my school. I will invest in the school and its
community, by becoming involved with sports, clubs or tutoring. I will create a supportive
learning environment where parents feel that they are always welcome. By this point, I should
also be comfortable approaching parents with any questions, concerns or praise I might have for
their child. As for within the classroom, I should have found which strategies work the best for
myself and my students; however, I should also begin to adjust my style to fit with each new
group on students that enter my classroom. Reflection will play a large part in my future goals as
well. I never want to teach an ineffective lesson. Therefore, I will keep a detailed report on all of
my lessons, denoting which ones students liked and disliked, which lessons worked well and fell
flat, and how to improve upon all lesson for the next year. I would also like to work with other
teachers to create interdisciplinary units that promote student excitement and engagement.
Additionally, I would like to further my own knowledge and pedagogical skills by attending
workshops and seminars. I plan on stay up-to-date on literatureEnglish Language Arts in
particularby reading articles on current issues. Staying well-informed on technology and
resources that will aid in student growth is also an important goal. Therefore, I plan on becoming
a member in a few professional development organizations (listed below). Lastly, I plan to obtain
a Masters Degree within the first few years of my teaching career.
