What’s Phrasal Verb?

• Combination of :

Verb + Adverb particle = variety meanings

Note.
Adverb particles : above, about,
across, ahead, along, aside, away,
back, before, up, down, etc. 2
E.g.
• Give back: return
Give back this book to the library!
• Ask for: demand
The little girl asked for a new doll.
• Go ahead : lead the way
You go ahead and I’ll follow you.

Multiple Meanings
• Make up
– in the end she made up her mind to apply for a
job. (come to a decision)
– Both of you had to make up your quarrel (end it)
– What an unbelievable explanation! I think you’re
just making it up. (invent)
– Actress have to be made up before they appear
on stage. (use cosmetics)

Sentence Patterns
• Type 1

Noun + P.Verb + Adverbial pattern

e.g.
The price of oranges went up
towards the end of the season

• Type 2
Noun + P.Verb + Noun pattern

E.g.
The murder burnt down the corpse.
The murder burnt the corpse down. (The
phrasal verb can be separated by the object)
The Murder burnt it** down.
**A separable phrasal verb is always
separated when a pronoun substitutes for
a noun as the direct object.

• Type 3

Noun + P.Verb + Noun + Noun pattern

E.g.
He served me up a glass of cocktail.

He served up a glass of cocktail for me


He served a glass of cocktail up for me

• Not all transitive phrasal verbs are separable.
E.g.
The Employees asked for better wages
The car skidded and ran into a lamp post. (struck
a lamp post)

The impossible pattern!!!


The car skidded and ran a lamp post into.

• passive form
E.g.
The murder burnt down the corpse.
The corpse was burnt down by the murder.

Gerund ☞ Cutting down the tree will
ruin the land
Infinitive ☞ He decide to ring up the
restaurant to book seats for tonight.
Modal ☞ He can look after his
brother tonight.

• Inseparable pattern
E.g.
I’m looking forward to the Easter
holiday.
I get on with him quite well.
