Task Focus:
Is recycling worth the cost and effort?

Task Context:

TOPIC
AREA

CARETAKERS
OF THE EARTH

The local landfill at Kingfisher Road, Port Macquarie is closed

due to lack of space. Waste is now transferred to Cairncross by
road adding to road congestion and pollution. We drastically
need to reduce the amount of waste being dumped into landfill
in Port Macquarie to avoid another mountain of garbage.
To help circulate this important message the Port Macquarie
Hastings Council has created a poster competition which
requires students to compose a poster, targeting local residents,
which presents recycling initiatives to combat the waste issue
and which persuades people to recognise the importance of
recycling.
You are to imagine that your poster has been selected as one of
the top five posters entered.

Outcomes Assessed
EN4-1A, EN43B, EN4-6C, EN4-7D

The top five entrants are required to present a speech to

representatives of the Council, which outlines the recycling
initiatives that you believe provide solutions to the waste
management problem and which persuasively explains why your
poster is effective.

Task:
If you know that you will be absent during any part of this assessment process, please notify your teacher
as soon as possible.
This task requires you to compose two texts, a POSTER and a SPEECH, and to submit a detailed and accurately
structured BIBLIOGRAPHY.

Poster

Purpose: To present recycling initiatives that provide solutions to the waste management problem and to encourage
people to support recycling.
Audience: Residents or rate payers in the Hastings Council

Structure: (Your poster must be A4 sized. A range of posters have been displayed during lessons to provide you with
some ideas on how you might structure this type of text.)
File Type: Your poster needs to be saved as an A4 PDF file. It must be saved as username_7eng_poster.
Submitting: Your teachers will help you submit this file to Moodle on Friday 29 th August.

2.

Speech

Purpose: To communicate recycling initiatives that provide solutions to the waste management problem and to
persuasively explain the effectiveness of your poster; how written and visual features have been used to convey
recycling initiatives and to encourage people to support recycling.
Audience: Representatives of the Hastings Council
Language: This response requires formal language which is appropriate to the audience. It also requires the
language of explanation showing cause and effect when explaining the effectiveness of your features and
persuasive language needs to be used to convince the Council representatives that your poster is effective.
Structure: This text needs to be persuasive overall. Therefore your text needs to use an exposition text structure.
Speech Timing: Students are asked to speak for 2-3 minutes. Those still speaking at 3.30 will be asked to sit down.
Please Note: Palm cards and a pointer are the only aides you may use.
