Grade 3 Science Notes with Tara:

Celebrations topics are interesting and kid friendly...can see and experience; students are excited (); sharing of
ideas within the team
kids enjoy science more, the topics are more interesting, good resources on the portal, students are doing research
to learn and teach each other; mini-webquest through pebblego; students understand what a meteorologist does
Questions Where can we get assessments? Performance expectation defines the assessment in NGSS document on the
portal. Formative assessment samples can be found on the portal.

Do the formative assessments on the portal define the level that we are supposed to go
with the content?
Content seems easier but the practices make it more student driven and working more like
a scientist. Look to the standards page and performance expectations...disciplinary core
ideas is what students need to understand. Use the evidence statements on the portal
(linked from the standard), you can see what mastery is for that particular performance
expectation.
It is not about memorizing the life cycle of a butterfly. It is the pattern of life cycles that
students need to be able describe and apply.
How do we teach...if students only need to be able to chart and graph...do we need to teach
them what precipitation is...how much background and theory do they need...it is about
engaging them in the collection of data (observation) and do they know how to represent
the data.
How do you piece it all together? It is taking a lot of time. You need to create the instruction
for YOUR students. Think about the goals they need.
Be sure to keep checking the Science Announcements page on the Science portal.
Where do we get supplies?
What is the natural progression. Where do you start and where do you end? Look at
Performance Expectations

Start with what they can directly observe at their school. You can extend weather and
climate across the year.
Needs trying to find ways to fit it in
supplies...contact Tara, use materials request form on portal to get live materials
Next Steps ~keep checking Special Announcements on the Science Portal
~continue to explore resources on portal
~contact Tara if you need anything or have questions
