    yourproposal.InreceivingcompensationandsettingthemfreeIwillretainmoremoneyeven
    afterhiringthembackassteadylaborers.Atthesametimeitmustberemembered,that,while
    heisreceivingfromthemtheiruniformandbestservices,heisrequiredbytheDivineLaw,to
    affordthemprotection,andsuchnecessariesandconveniencesoflifeasarepropertotheir
    conditionasservantssofarasheisenabledbytheirservicestoaffordthemthesecomforts,on

    justandrationalprinciples.Iwonthavetopayfortheirfoodorsheltersincetheywillnolonger

    years.Slavery,itappears,isofgreatantiquity.Ithasexistedintheworld,insomeformor
    other,evenfromthetimesimmediatelyfollowing,ifnotbeforetheflood.Whyshouldwe
    attempttochangesomethingthathasbeenaroundforsolong?Itsecuresworkand
    subsistenceforall.Slavesarebetteroffinslaverybecausetheyretainaconstantsupplyof
    workandastableplacetolive.Thenegroisimprovidentwillnotlayupinsummerforthe
    wantsofwinterwillnotaccumulateinyouthfortheexigenciesofage.Hewouldbecomean
    insufferableburdentosociety.Societyhastherighttopreventthis,andcanonlydosoby
    subjectinghimtodomesticslavery.Withouttheguideofthesouthernslaveholders,slavesare
    soincompetentthattheywouldbelostandunabletofunctionaspositivecontributorstosociety.
