Plant Morphoanatomy

Morphoanatomy is a compound word comprises of two root


words.
Morphology- comes from Greek word morph= form + logy=
study
- it deals with the study of form of an organism
Anatomy- a branch of morphology that deals with the structure
of an organism.
- comes from the Greek word ana= up + temnein= to cut
Therefore, plant morphoanatomy is the study of the external and
gross (the study of the structure of the body and its parts without
the use of a microscope) internal structure of plant organs.

Why Study Plants?


Without plants, human and most other species of
animals wouldnt be here.
Through photosynthesis in plants and other
photosynthetic organisms changed the earth in major
ways:
1. The fixation of carbon dioxide and the release of
molecular oxygen in photosynthesis.
2. Plants are the major components of many
communities and ecosystems. (Because they are the
primary producers.)

Plants Importance to Human


Agricultural plants are our major source of food.
We utilize all plants parts as food products:
a) Roots; sweet potatoes, carrots, kamas etc
b) Stems; sugar cane
c) Leaves; cabbage, celery, lettuce, malunggay
d) Flowers; cauliflower, broccoli, katuday
e) Fruits and seeds; rice, corn, beans, peas etc.

Other uses of plants


Flavoring agents (herbs and spices)
Stimulating beverages (chocolate, coffee, tea, cola)
Alcoholic drinks (beer, wine; basi, lambanog)
Woody trees (used structurally for lumber and paper)
In tropical regions; bamboos, palms serve in the
construction of human dwellings
Plant fibers and cotton are used to make thread for
clothes
Plats are important also for aesthetic beauty and
cultivation as ornamentals is an important industry.
And we dont forget its great medical significance to treat
variety of illnesses or to maintain good health.
