Overview of Eye
Exams

need to get their vision checked at 6
months, their 3rd birthday, and before
preschool and first grade. Those who
have diabetes, high blood pressure, work
at a physically demanding job, or take
medications that affect eyesight should

While sitting, the doctor uses an

ophthalmoscope and a dilated pupil to
examine the back part of your eyes (the
retina, retinal blood vessels, and the front
part of the optic nerve). In this test, your
pupils may or may not need to be dilated,
depending on how large your pupils

Also while sitting, the doctor shines a light in

your eye and flips the lenses in a machine
called a phoropter while staring at the large
E on the Snellen chart. By examining the way
that the light reflects from your eye, the
doctor then concludes an approximate idea of
the lens prescription needed.
