Rationale
for
Instructiona
l Design

This lesson was delivered in a small group setting during

Social Studies instructional time. My rationale for this design
was based upon this group of students being early finishers.
They are above grade level readers and were able to read
and comprehend the assigned passage before other
students. The students had previous schema because we
have been learning about the European Explorers during
Social Studies. These students already read their assigned
passage individually. I wanted them to synthesize and create
a product based on the information they learned. Although
this lesson was mostly Social Studies standard driven, the
reading standard of referring to a text was also incorporated.
I wanted my students to create a Prezi because I thought it

Summary of
Significance

was an appropriate interface for my aged students. Prezi

allowed the students to demonstrate their understanding of
the European Explorers while allowing the students to have
creativity in their work.
The majority of the components of the lesson went well. The
implementation of using Prezi went well due to some
students having previous knowledge using this app. This was
an advantage for me the teacher because I was able to
troubleshoot and help the students that were having
difficulty. One part of the implementation that could have
been better is already taking pictures of the explorers and
having them saved on the Ipads camera roll. I had the
students Google images to find the pictures needed for their
Prezis. Although, I had prepared and searched Google images
prior to ensure they wouldnt be exposed to any
inappropriate content, I still wish I would have made this
change from the beginning of the lesson. Also, I would have
changed the way I told the students which Explorer to start
with first in their first frame. Unknowingly, I was taking away
from my students creativity and the major reason why
students love to use technology in the classroom.
Competencies
Demonstrate knowledge of the content that they plan
to teach as well as the professional, state, and
institutional (conceptual framework) standards related
to content knowledge. This was evidences in my
introduction of the lesson when I prompted my
students to retell/refer back to the text they read for
information.
Demonstrate a broad knowledge of instructional
strategies in their content area, and be able to use that
knowledge to facilitate student learning. This was
evidenced in my use of technology using the IPADS for
apps, images, and other sources.
Plan, design, and implement developmentally
appropriate activities and experiences to meet the
needs of all students, including students from
culturally diverse backgrounds, students with
exceptionalities, and English Language Learners. This

was evidenced through my use of the Prezi application.

This app allowed my students to create their own
presentation based on the information they know.
Students were not given a rubric to follow allowing
students to modify and make accommodations for
themselves by creating a presentation fit for them.
Demonstrate knowledge of technology and use
technology to support effective teaching, enhance
student learning, and monitor student progress. This
was evidenced in my integration of the iPads.
Specifically the use of the Prezi app to ascertain
student understanding.
Program Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to the
integration of technology to support teaching and learning.
Develop instructional materials, experiences and
assessments that leverage instructional technologies to
inspire student creativity and performance.
