areexpectedtoparticipate.Handsonscientificinvestigationandexperimentationarethefocus
ofoursciencefair.Overthenextfewmonths,yourchildwillresearch,design,test,analyze,
andpresentaprojectoftheirchoosingthatusesscientificmethodstosolveaproblem.

Themajorityofthesciencefairprojectisexpectedtobecompletedathome.Studentswillbe
givenprojectguidelinesandshorttermgoalsthatwillneedtobemetaccordingtotheproject
timeline.Muchoftheworkwillbeselfdirected.Parentsareencouragedtoofferemotional
supportandreminders,buttoallowthestudentstodotheprojectsbythemselves.The
expectationisthatyourchildwilldoaninvestigationthattheyhavecreatedthemselves.The
internetcanbeusedforresearchandinspirationbutnottocopyanexperiment.

1. Istheselectedtopicofinteresttoyourchild?
Yourchildwillbespendingalotoftimeonthisproject,sothinkofsomethingthatis
alreadyofinterest.
2. Doestheprojecthaveapracticalapplication?
Whatpapertowelabsorbsthefastest
willnotresultinagaininscientificknowledgeor
aneworimprovedprocessorproduct.
3. Arethematerialsandequipmentreadilyavailabletodothisproject?
Wearelookingforyourchildtofindinventive,inexpensivewaystodotheirexperiment.
Settingabudgetshouldbeanimportantstepinselectingtheirproject.Ifyourchildfinds
anexperimentthatisofinterestbutdoesnotmeetthebudget,theymaybeableto
changethematerialsorproceduretomaketheexperimentlessexpensiveortime
consuming.
Rememberinordertovalidateresultsthattheexperimentneedstohave
atleast
three
repeatedtrials.
