OLTD 511

Week 2 Assignment

Karen Gadowsky
Blended Learning

Synopsis:
This assignment was somewhat time consuming as I watched each video 2 or 3 times (yes not
a requirement of the assignment but for me, a necessity). Regardless of the time spent
reviewing each schools video, I still felt very ill equipped to make actual judgments about the
efficacy of each model according to the criteria.
Needless to say, it was extremely interesting to see the variance among all the schools that
would be considered under the Blended Learning umbrella. It was inspiring for me to see all
these schools in action despite knowing that the promotional aspect was first and foremost and
that the problems inherent in each of the styles were not mentioned.
As for the ranking, I separated them into 2 categories: Elementary and Middle School Up. But I
had a difficult time discerning which would be ranked next after the top three in each category. I
put a less than five (<5) symbol for those who would compete for ties for 4th and 5th place and
similarly for >5.
Elementary:
1. KIPP
2. Carpe Diem
3. Rocketship

Middle School and Up:

1. San Fransisco Flex
2. Carpe Diem
3. Acton Academy

Program Name: Teach to One

Blended Model: Rotation - Individual

Video #: 1
Rank #: >5

Overall Impression:
I liked the results oriented approach that the Teach to One program provides. The only subject
that Teach to One covers, that I can tell, is Mathematics.

Rank Rationale:
Though I am a mathematics specialist, and am excited about the possibility of many students
being given the opportunity to personalize their learning.

For grades K-6

Overall Impression:
Love that this school begins at Kindergarten! Appears that both male and female teachers are
working with Primary age students. Computers not intended to replace teachers but used as
tools to inform instruction, remediate and personalize learning for kids. Diversity for

Rank Rationale:
Attends to personal relationships that are crucial for child development by having the majority of
the time spent in school being with other children and adults. Computers are used as tools that
help students remediate and get more personalized content appropriate for their learning stage.

For Elementary School

Overall Impression:
Rotation between direct instruction, collaborative groups and computers that deliver the same
material in three different ways. Focus on real time data that teachers, students, parents and
administrators have access to for "increased transparency."

Rank Rationale:
I am not sure how students move through the stations but the work space looked conducive to
the students having control over which station they would access. Focus on Mastery of concept
before moving on.

Overall Impression:
20 schools focused on results with getting students to graduate from College. Autonomy seems
to be desired - "The kids need to have the adults get out of the way." Pacing is student
controlled. "The teacher is not going to move forward until you're one of the strong ones also."
Large focus on "cost effectiveness" as well as student success.

Program Name: Mission Dolores Acadamey

Blended Model: Rotation - Station

Video #: 5
Rank #: <5

Overall Impression:
What I see in this program is that students have more direct control over the pace at which they
move through curriculum. Aspects are gamified and badges and rewards are given for certain
behaviours of mastery. It is not clear to me to what extent they control the choice of curriculum
they study however.

Rank Rationale:
Mission Delores is a school of only 225, of which many students have very difficult
backgrounds. Im not sure that complete differentiation is occurring in this setting but I like that
the students get targeted help.

Overall Impression:
The space was gorgeous! Modern, clean lines, comfortable, newprobably over 100 million
dollars in the making! Seemed to be a K-12 school but other than seeing older students on
computers, in what seemed to be collaborative circle tables, I can not determine what blended
learning model is most fitting.

Rank Rationale:
For a world school it appeared predominately white, not only in colour scheme of the learning
space, but in race!

For Elementary

Overall Impression:
Their blended model integrates direct teacher intstruction, computer learning, targeted
intervention (data base decision making for small group teaching), team learning - collaborative
work with group projects, small group instruction with peers at similar stages of learning. Liked
that students rotated between two classrooms with Math/Science and Humanities teacher
specialists in the day but also had time for language learning, physical activity and "the arts."

Rank Rationale:
Five sub-categories of learning models included in the weekly routine. Students split their time
daily between Math/Science and English/Social Studies teacher specialists which I think is a
good idea at any level so long as cross-curricular projects are still included.

Blended Model: Rotation - Flipped Classroom

Video #: 8
Rank #: <5

Overall Impression:
Liked that the teacher made his own videos for "the flip." The teacher was definitely energizedby
this style of instruction and felt that his time was used more effectively for student learning.

Rank Rationale:
Though I loved this guy and his energy, I do think that the flipped model still requires that
students all learn along the same continuum which is good for those who like the social aspect
of learning together but not so much for the personalization of learning as far as pacing is
concerned. If enrichment activities are available for those who understand quickly, this would be
a good model for schools who wish to be in the hybrid zone.

Overall Impression:
Teacher's very impressed with student increased engagment with Flipped Model.

Rank Rationale:
Seems to be good for the kids in that school. Certainly a divergence from what is stereotypically
reported as rote learing in the Asian countries.

Overall Impression:
Impressive results! Not sure what level is considered "proficient" but if students all across
Arizona are tested the same, this model seems to have had a significant impact. Interesting that
they have actually designed a learning space with students in mind! "System-centric vs studentcentric - build a school from the ground up centred around the student instead of the
bureaucracy."

Rank Rationale:
Courses seem to be customized to help student "start where they are" and get them up to
speed. Think that the students having the same teacher, for each content area, for the three
grades of middle school, is a good idea. "Family feel" is impressive.

Overall Impression:
Flex model sure appeals to me for kids who struggle. Interesting concept are academic coaches
(seems Educational Assistant-like). These are people who pre-assess students before passing
them along to a teacher.

Rank Rationale:
Very personalized. It seems like the students still have positive social experiences. More world
of work like where people are together NOT based on age. Family feel which I think is important
to aspect for many youth. Makes accommodations for

Overall Impression:
This Flex model seems to be school based. I liked the comment a teacher made about getting
kids through their bad, past school experiences with the flex model is like "mending a broken
heart!"

Rank Rationale:
Very personalized. Student success is self-defined though it seems that they strive, in general,
for very high standards. Looks like a place that has a high rate of "recovery" from previous bad
experiences.

Blended Model: Rotation - Individual

Overall Impression:
Not separated into grade levels but definitely work on Core Skills on an individual basis. Student
centred with teachers as guides. They notice that "age is not an indicator of skill." Loved the
idea of "failure as being an exciting part of life, and exciting opportunity to try again." Focus on
figuring out what are each student's individual gifts.

Rank Rationale:
Work to create Self-directed learners! Small school (29 students) but won "Top Blended School
in America Award" with standardized tests being given. Physical activity seems to be a larger
component than other school. It's nice to see equal weight placed on the arts and athletics
within an academic environment. Well rounding seems key.

Cyber education as well as f2f classroom. "We're finally going at the speed of the students." Any
time anywhere learning. Good point about teachers having being given essential professional
development.

Rank Rationale:
Really flexible around student's lives. Failure NOT an option - nice blend of "anytime anywhere"
learning but group learning seems to be accessible.
