Unit C: Cycling of Matter in Living Systems

Emphasis: Nature of Science
November 9th-December 10th
Focusing Questions
How did the cell theory disprove spontaneous generation, and revolutionize
life sciences?
How do single-celled organism carry out life functions? How is this similar to
plants using specialized cells to carry out these functions on a larger scale?
How does imagining technology further our understanding of cells?
Unit Summary:
Cells are the fundamental units of life, and serve as an example of an
efficient open system with various components (organelles) that carry out
the basic functions of life. Students will recognize that advancements in
microscopy have enhanced our ability to study cells and cellular processes.
Understanding these processes can then be applied from single-celled
organisms to multi-celled organisms.
Learning Outcome Summary
STS and Knowledge Outcomes
1. Students will explain the relationship between developments in imagining
technology and the current understanding of the cell.
- Timeline of cell theory development
- Advancements in knowledge of cell structure and function
- Molecular-level cell research
2. Students will describe the function of cell organelles and structures in a
cell, in terms of life processes, and use models to explain these processes
and their applications.
- Passive transport vs. Active transport
- Complex processes of the cell membrane (eg. diffusion, osmosis,
endo/exocytosis)
- Cellular functions as an open system
- Structure and function of organelles
- Plant cells vs. Animal cells
- Cell membrane maintaining equilibrium
- Uses of knowledge about semi-permeable membranes
- Cell size and shape
3. Students will analyze plants as an example of a Multicellular organism
with specialized structures at the cellular, tissue and system levels.
- Single-celled vs. Multicellular organisms
- Specialized cells of the leaf system that support photosynthesis
- The plant transport system
- Gas exchange in plants

- Phototropism and gravitropism history and examples

Skills Outcomes:
Initiating and Planning:
Students will ask questions based on observations, and plan investigations
that include problem trouble shooting, experimental design with identified
variables, predictions, hypotheses, and necessary materials.
Performing and Recording:
Students will carry out experiments and gather data from a wide variety of
sources. Students will use instruments correctly and accurately for collecting
data, and will estimate quantities when appropriate.
Analyzing and Interpreting:
Students will analyze data and apply mathematical/conceptual models,
including compiling and displaying data using various methods, interpreting
patterns and data trends, and stating conclusions based on gathered
evidence.
Communication and Teamwork:
Students will collaborate cooperatively with others, communicating
questions, ideas, plans and results in multiple ways, and evaluating both
individual and group participation.
Attitude Outcomes:
Interest in Science:
Students will show interest in science questions and issues, and pursue
personal interests and career opportunities.
Mutual Respect:
Students will appreciate that understanding science comes from interactions
with others, with various views and ideas.
Scientific Inquiry:
Students will find and apply evidence when analyzing investigations and
issues.
Collaboration:
Students will collaborate on investigations, and generating and evaluating
ideas.
Stewardship:
Students will demonstrate sensitivity toward others, and take responsibility
for their own actions.
